January Coffee Rendezvous

As the calendar page turned, we collectively let out a sigh of relief – January, the perceived longest month of the year, was finally behind us! It often feels like an endurance test, doesn’t it? Yet, amidst its lingering days, it offered profound lessons and unforgettable family moments for us. I sincerely hope your January was productive, filled with successful goal-setting, or perhaps, like mine, dedicated to a much-needed focus on relaxation. My personal resolution was to carve out more time for unwinding, a crucial antidote to my tendency to overwork. Delving into the comforting world of the Great British Baking Challenge on Netflix proved to be my perfect escape, a simple joy that always brings a smile to my face.

Our household experienced an exceptionally eventful January, a whirlwind of anticipation, challenges, and heartwarming milestones. Before we dive deeper into the details, why not settle in with a warm, creamy cashew coffee? It’s the perfect companion for a cozy catch-up session as we reflect on a month that tested our spirits but ultimately strengthened our bonds.

Josh’s Successful Surgery: A Journey of Hope and Healing

Without a doubt, the paramount event dominating our January was Josh’s much-anticipated surgery. This wasn’t a spontaneous decision; we had meticulously planned and prepared for this day since its booking back in September. The weeks leading up to it were a delicate balance of anxiety and hopeful anticipation. Now, standing on the other side, we’re filled with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and profound relief. We did it – we navigated through this significant hurdle as a family! The emotional landscape of that period was vast, encompassing a spectrum of feelings from apprehension to eventual triumph. For those who wish to delve deeper into the specifics of his journey, including more comprehensive information, heartwarming pictures, and touching videos, I encourage you to visit my dedicated post on Josh’s clubfoot journey. It chronicles the strength and resilience of our little warrior and the unwavering support of our family.

Three Weeks of Intentional Quarantine: Embracing Home Life

A critical component of our pre-surgery plan involved safeguarding Josh’s health. It was imperative that he remained healthy in the two weeks preceding his operation, as any illness would necessitate a reschedule, a prospect we desperately wanted to avoid after months of preparation. In my role as a naturally cautious mother, I implemented a strict, three-week quarantine for our family, ensuring we stayed safely within the confines of our home. This meant no outings, no social gatherings – our only ventures outside were daily jogs with the boys securely fastened in their stroller, maintaining our distance from others. This period of isolation began right after New Year’s Day, transforming our routine entirely.

Surprisingly, the timing of our self-imposed quarantine proved to be rather serendipitous. Having just celebrated Christmas, our boys were surrounded by an endless array of new toys, which became their primary source of entertainment. These novelties kept them happily occupied for hours on end, so much so that they hardly noticed our confinement! This period inadvertently honed our skills in finding engaging entertainment within the home, a significant feat considering we reside in a cozy 700 square-foot tiny home. Living in a smaller space during extended periods at home truly challenges one’s creativity, but it also fosters a unique sense of closeness and resourcefulness. Our days were filled with imaginative play, storytelling, and discovering new ways to interact within our intimate family bubble.

There was one particular instance, however, when the cabin fever truly set in, and I found myself in desperate need of a change of scenery. In a moment of pure inspiration, I bundled the boys into the car for an adventure that might seem trivial to most: a drive through the local car wash. The cascading water, the swirling brushes, and the sudden darkness followed by bright light felt incredibly exhilarating and wildly entertaining after two weeks without leaving the house. It was a small, simple pleasure that brought disproportionate joy, a testament to how the smallest deviations from routine can feel like grand escapades when isolation becomes the norm.

Unlocking Imagination with Library Books: A Free Entertainment Treasure Trove

It’s baffling to me now why it took so long to fully grasp the sheer joy and educational value that library books could bring to our home. However, once we did, there was no looking back! Our boys have developed an absolute obsession with books from the library, transforming into avid young readers. Right before our “quarantine” commenced, we embarked on a massive book-stocking mission. We literally checked out over twenty new books, a diverse collection tailored to their interests and ages. The result was instantaneous: all they wanted to do, day in and day out, was immerse themselves in these captivating stories and vibrant illustrations. It was a beautiful sight to behold, witnessing their developing love for literature.

Library Books for Kids

This newfound passion for reading truly became a lifeline during our weeks of confinement. Shawn, ever the supportive dad, made two additional trips to the library, returning the well-loved books and bringing home fresh batches of literary treasures. This continuous influx of new stories provided endless hours of wholesome, engaging, and most importantly, free entertainment. It underscored the incredible resource libraries are, not just for books, but for fostering imagination, learning, and quiet joy, particularly invaluable during times when external activities are limited.

“Beep Beep!” Adventures in the Car: Simple Pleasures

Speaking of simple yet ingenious forms of entertainment, we discovered another wonderfully fun, free, and germ-free activity: playing in the car! This became a cherished part of our daily routine, especially during our quarantine period when outdoor options were scarce and caution was paramount.

Kids Playing in Car

Almost every day, immediately after our stroller jog, the boys would eagerly clamber into my car. It was their private playground, a vehicle for imaginative adventures. I’d switch on their favorite music, transforming the car into a lively concert hall. They would delight in rolling the windows up and down countless times, a seemingly simple action that provided endless fascination. Honking the horn became a symphony of joyous, unrestrained noise, a rare treat that was usually off-limits. They could simply let loose and be as boisterous as they pleased! This ingenious playtime ritual consistently managed to occupy an entire hour, consuming their boundless energy and sparking their creativity. What’s more, they never grew tired of it, proving that sometimes, the most basic activities yield the greatest happiness.

A Mother’s Tea, Sweetened by Little Fingers: Everyday Parenthood

In the whimsical world of parenthood, sometimes the most unexpected “ingredients” find their way into our daily rituals. Who needs to meticulously measure sugar into their tea when it can be “sweetened” by the eager, curious fingers of the sweetest boys around? Haha! I say that mostly in jest, of course, but it perfectly encapsulates a charming, albeit slightly unhygienic, daily occurrence in our home.

My boys absolutely adore sampling my tea, repeatedly dipping their tiny fingers into the warm liquid for a taste test. It’s an elaborate ritual where they also pretend the tea is scorching hot, reacting with exaggerated “oohs” and “aahs” as if their fingers are truly burning. Oh, the endearing theatrics of motherhood! These small, quirky interactions, though sometimes a test of patience, are the very fabric of our family life, creating moments of shared laughter and treasured memories amidst the everyday.

Movies Galore: A Welcome Exception During Confinement

Typically, I strive to limit screen time, aiming to go through most of the day without resorting to movies. However, when you’re confined to the house “all the time,” as we were during our three-week quarantine, exceptions are not just made; they become a necessary and welcome relief. During this intense period, I relaxed our usual rules, allowing the boys the luxury of watching a movie every single day.

Boys Cuddled Watching Movie

These daily cinematic adventures often saw them snuggled closely next to each other, completely riveted by the stories unfolding on screen. Their shared focus and quiet camaraderie during these times were truly heartwarming to witness. It was clear these movie sessions provided a much-needed mental escape and a comfortable routine during an otherwise unusual period. And speaking of timing, Disney+ couldn’t have launched at a more perfect moment for our family! Its vast library of beloved films and shows became an invaluable resource, offering endless entertainment and comfort just when we needed it most. It provided a touch of magic during a challenging time, proving that sometimes, a little screen time can be a true blessing.

Shawn, Our “Muscle Man”: Conquering Mount Everest-Like Driveways

Every family has its unsung heroes, and in our household, when it comes to impressive feats of strength and ingenuity, Shawn often takes center stage. This particular scenario perfectly illustrates his “muscle man” capabilities: imagine tackling a driveway that feels as steep as Mount Everest, all while simultaneously managing three bulky trash cans and a lively four-year-old. It’s a logistical and physical challenge that would daunt many, but for Shawn, it’s just another day in the life of a dedicated dad.

Shawn Carrying Trash Cans and Child

His secret, as humorously depicted, lies in the art of stacking—not just the cans, but ingeniously incorporating a child into the strategy! This resourceful approach not only gets the job done but often turns mundane tasks into memorable, albeit challenging, moments. It’s a testament to his strength, patience, and ability to find practical solutions, even when faced with a steep incline and multiple “cargo” items. These daily demonstrations of his resilience and unwavering commitment are just another reason why he’s our family’s true muscle man.

Indoor “Trampoline” Adventures: Creativity in Confinement

During our weeks of quarantine, when outdoor play was limited, our boys quickly mastered the art of creative indoor entertainment. Who needs a conventional trampoline when you possess the imaginative power to transform everyday furniture into an exhilarating play space? Our living room, with its tall dresser and inviting couch, became the ultimate indoor “trampoline” arena.

This ingenious setup allowed them to burn off boundless energy, leaping and bouncing between the safe, cushioned surfaces. It was a delightful display of their adaptability and ability to find joy and physical activity within limited confines. While perhaps not OSHA-approved, their self-made trampoline provided countless hours of laughter, physical exertion, and imaginative play, proving that a child’s creativity can transform any space into a realm of endless possibilities.

“Daddy’s Home!”: A Heroic Return During Quarantine

The sound of the front door opening and the familiar jingle of keys always heralds an exciting moment in our household, but during our strict quarantine days, Shawn’s return home was nothing short of a heroic event. His daily arrival became a highlight, a much-anticipated burst of energy and fresh perspective after hours of being confined within our home.

Shawn would swoop in like a true hero, instantly brightening our days with his presence and playful spirit. Of course, his heroic entrance was always preceded by a thorough hand-washing ritual, meticulously supervised by me. He was incredibly diligent throughout this period, taking extraordinary precautions not to bring any germs home from work, employing copious amounts of hand sanitizer. His unwavering carefulness paid off – it worked! His efforts not only kept him healthy but, more importantly, safeguarded Josh, ensuring his surgery could proceed as planned. Shawn’s consistent dedication to keeping us all safe, coupled with his ability to lift our spirits, made his “Daddy’s Home!” moments truly invaluable during those challenging quarantine days.

Leaving Ryan: A Bittersweet Separation for a Greater Good

As Josh’s surgery date drew near, a difficult decision had to be made regarding our youngest son, Ryan. To ensure Josh received our undivided attention and care during and immediately after his operation, we made the bittersweet choice to leave Ryan with my incredibly supportive mom for five nights. This was, by far, the longest period we had all been apart as a family, and the sadness of the separation was palpable. Before our departure, I essentially cuddled him nonstop, soaking in every possible moment of his sweet presence, and the entire family participated in this pre-separation lovefest. Despite the emotional challenge, we all managed beautifully, adapting to the temporary change.

Ryan with Mom

Ultimately, this arrangement worked out for the best in every possible way. Ryan thrived under the devoted, full attention of his grandma, enjoying a special bond and individual care. Meanwhile, Shawn and I were able to fully focus on Josh, providing him with the concentrated comfort, support, and medical attention he needed during his critical recovery phase. It was a testament to our family’s flexibility and the immense support system we are fortunate to have, navigating a challenging time with love and practical solutions.

From “Skinny” to “Baggy”: A Personal Triumph in a Drawer

Here’s a cool story, a small personal triumph amidst the whirlwind of Josh’s surgery! Right before we left for the hospital, I found myself in a flurry of activity, manically organizing my house. You know how it is – when you’re feeling overwhelmed or freaking out about a big event, sometimes channeling that energy into something productive, like cleaning or organizing, can be surprisingly therapeutic. It’s a way to regain a sense of control amidst chaos.

As I was sifting through my drawers, I stumbled upon my “skinny jeans,” relegated to the back. We all have those jeans, don’t we? The ones we’ve held onto for years, clinging to the hopeful belief that they’ll fit comfortably again someday. These particular jeans were special; I had acquired them perhaps a month or two before I became pregnant with Josh in 2015. So, that meant they were five years old. Even back then, fresh off the rack, they were notoriously TIGHT, requiring a bit of a shimmy and a prayer to get into.

Baggy Skinny Jeans

With a sense of nostalgic curiosity, I decided to try them on. To my absolute astonishment and utter delight, they were too big! Not just a little loose, but genuinely baggy! It was the coolest feeling EVER, a moment of pure, unadulterated triumph that truly made all the consistent hard work, the dedication to staying active, and the endless jogging absolutely worth it. It felt like a tangible reward for prioritizing my health and well-being. On a related note, can we all offer a collective “amen” that high-rise jeans are currently in style? These once-tight “skinny” jeans now feel incredibly low-cut by comparison, a humorous reminder of changing fashion trends and my body’s incredible journey.

Nintendo Nostalgia: Introducing the Boys to Retro Gaming

Before our departure for Josh’s surgery, Shawn orchestrated another fantastic distraction that proved to be a hit with both the boys and himself. He unearthed his venerable old Nintendo 64, a console that held a special place in his own childhood memories. For Josh, this was a momentous occasion – he had never before experienced the world of video games. The moment he picked up the controller, he was completely captivated, instantly falling in love with the classic gaming experience. His younger brother, Ryan, not to be left out, adorably mimicked his older brother, pretending to play with a controller that wasn’t even plugged in! It was a sweet, comical scene, perfectly encapsulating the innocent joy of childhood imitation.

Boys Playing Nintendo

It was genuinely hard to tell who was more excited about this retro gaming session: the boys, or Shawn himself. In truth, it was unequivocally Shawn. By far. He was absolutely in heaven, reliving cherished memories while simultaneously creating new ones with his sons. Introducing them to the games of his youth wasn’t just about entertainment; it was a beautiful bonding experience, bridging generations through shared laughter and pixelated adventures. It truly was a thoughtful and successful pre-surgery distraction for everyone.

Lego Mania: Constructive Distraction in the Hotel

The two days preceding Josh’s surgery were spent in a hotel room, a necessary but potentially challenging environment for an energetic child awaiting a significant medical procedure. Understanding the need for sustained, calming entertainment, Shawn had a brilliant foresight that truly saved the day. He arrived armed with an impressive arsenal of Lego sets, specifically chosen for him and Josh to build together.

Boy Building Legos in Hotel

This was an absolute stroke of genius. The intricate process of assembling Lego creations provided the perfect blend of focus, creativity, and quiet engagement. They spent those two days immersed in construction, collaborating on various models and bringing miniature worlds to life brick by brick. The boys had the most incredible fun making them all, and more importantly, the Lego sets kept Josh thoroughly entertained and wonderfully distracted for two straight days. In a stressful pre-operative period, this constructive play proved invaluable, helping to keep anxiety at bay and foster a sense of calm and shared purpose between father and son. It was a testament to how simple, thoughtful planning can make a world of difference during challenging times.

The Smooth Journey Home: A Relief-Filled Flight

Beyond the inherent anxieties surrounding Josh’s surgery itself, one of my primary worries centered on our flight home. I braced myself for a potentially difficult journey, anticipating that Josh might experience significant pain and discomfort, particularly during a five-hour flight confined to a small airplane seat. The thought of him enduring such an ordeal after surgery weighed heavily on my mind.

Josh on Plane

However, to our immense relief and pleasant surprise, the journey home ended up being incredibly easy and comfortable! Josh had no pain whatsoever, a truly miraculous blessing. Furthermore, the plane was only half-full, allowing us the luxury of spreading out. Josh was able to stretch his legs and adjust himself comfortably, finding ample space to relax. To ensure his maximum comfort and happiness, I had packed his favorite lunch, a familiar and reassuring meal. He was also treated to special airplane snacks, an extra indulgence, and I had thoughtfully downloaded all his favorite movies onto his iPad. Looking at this kid, completely at ease and enjoying his flight, you’d think he was living the life of a seasoned traveler, not a post-surgery patient! It was a smooth, stress-free return that allowed us all to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Reunited with Ryan: A “Velcro” Welcome Home

The joy and anticipation of getting home to Ryan after our five-night separation were almost unbearable! While we knew he was in excellent hands with my mom, the absence of our youngest made our hearts ache. The moment we walked through the door and saw his sweet face, a wave of profound relief and happiness washed over us. It was a truly heartwarming reunion, filled with palpable emotion.

Josh and Ryan Reunited

After being apart for what felt like an eternity to his little heart, Ryan was absolutely stuck to me like velcro. He simply could not be put down for days! This intense need for physical closeness meant he even refused to ride in his stroller anymore, opting instead to be carried everywhere. Uh oh! While I’m certain this is just a phase, a natural reaction to the temporary separation, and will eventually pass, for now, I am absolutely soaking up every single one of these precious cuddles. These moments of intense affection are a beautiful reminder of the strength of our bond and the resilience of a child’s love after a period of absence.

Brotherly Wheelchair Fun: Navigating Recovery with Glee

Upon returning home, one item immediately became the undisputed hit of the house: Josh’s wheelchair. Far from being a source of sadness or limitation, it quickly transformed into a fascinating new toy and a vehicle for endless fun. Remarkably, Josh doesn’t seem to mind his casts at all, nor does he dwell on or even talk about his surgery. Instead, it’s non-stop “wheelchair talk” and playful navigation through the house!

Brothers in Wheelchair

His younger brother, Ryan, is equally enamored with the wheelchair. He absolutely loves it and takes great delight in trying to push Josh around the house, offering his enthusiastic, if somewhat wobbly, assistance. The sight of these two brothers interacting with such joy and cooperation, adapting to Josh’s temporary mobility challenges with such positive spirits, is incredibly adorable and heartwarming to witness. It’s a beautiful example of children’s natural ability to embrace new circumstances and find happiness even in unexpected situations.

Josh’s Agile Crab Walk: Mastering New Movements

When Josh isn’t happily zooming around in his wheelchair, he has discovered and swiftly mastered an entirely new form of locomotion: the crab walk. Due to the nature of his post-surgery recovery, he isn’t able to put any pressure on his knees, which means traditional crawling is out of the question for now. However, children’s adaptability is truly astonishing, and Josh quickly picked up this unique crab scooting technique with remarkable speed and agility! It’s incredible to watch him navigate the ground, maneuvering with impressive strength and coordination.

This video clip, showcasing his crab walk, is so perfectly “us.” It’s filled with the delightful, unfiltered sounds of our home: playful fart noises, affectionate smacking of daddy’s belly, and an abundance of genuine, infectious laughter. This vibrant, noisy, and joy-filled atmosphere is pretty much what’s going on in our house all the time. It’s a beautiful, authentic snapshot of our daily life, demonstrating that even amidst recovery, there’s always room for humor, love, and lighthearted fun.

Playful Brothers: Ryan’s Endless Patience

The dynamic between our two boys, Josh and Ryan, is a constant source of amusement and heartwarming observations. It’s particularly remarkable how much Ryan, as the younger sibling, is able to tolerate from his big brother, Josh. He possesses an incredible amount of patience and a remarkably long fuse, which is truly admirable in a little one. It often takes quite a while for him to finally reach his limit, even amidst Josh’s enthusiastic (and sometimes boundary-pushing) brotherly antics. This particular video clip absolutely cracks me up every time I watch it, perfectly capturing their unique and often comical interactions!

To all the younger siblings of the world, navigating the boisterous energy and playful teasing of their older brothers and sisters – we send you the biggest hugs! You are truly resilient, patient, and often the funniest members of the family, embodying a spirit of enduring love and tolerance. Your ability to roll with the punches and continue to engage with such good humor is a constant source of joy and admiration for parents everywhere. Haha!

Zoo Fun: Embracing New Adventures Post-Quarantine

With our rigorous quarantine period finally concluded, and Josh’s surgery behind us, our family was more than ready to step back out into the world and embrace some long-overdue adventures! This timing was particularly fortunate as Shawn is currently home from work on family leave, dedicated to assisting Josh with his recovery. This precious time together means we can embark on numerous fun daytime excursions as a united front, creating cherished memories.

Family at the Zoo

Our very first stop, a classic choice for guaranteed delight, was the local zoo! The boys’ eyes lit up at the sight of all the different animals, their curiosity sparked by every roar, squawk, and flutter. It was a joyful reintroduction to the outside world, a breath of fresh air after weeks of confinement. Seeing their excitement and hearing their laughter as they discovered new creatures was a truly rewarding experience, symbolizing our return to a more active and adventurous family life. This outing was not just entertainment; it was a celebration of progress and the start of a new chapter filled with exploration.

Lawrence Hall of Science: Exploring and Adapting

Following our exciting trip to the zoo, our second grand adventure took us to the Lawrence Hall of Science. The boys were absolutely thrilled to explore its interactive exhibits, filled with hands-on learning and fascinating displays. While they certainly enjoyed their time there, I personally felt it was a little on the expensive side for what it offered, but hey, when you’re actively searching for engaging activities to fill your days, sometimes the cost is secondary to the experience! We’re constantly on the lookout for enriching places to visit while daddy is home and Josh is recovering.

Family at Lawrence Hall of Science

What impressed me most during our visit was Josh’s incredible attitude. He never once complained or showed any signs of being downhearted about being in his wheelchair. He simply adapted, figuring out how to engage with the exhibits and play alongside other children, despite his temporary mobility limitations. Kids truly are so resilient, aren’t they? Their capacity to adjust and find joy in any circumstance is a constant source of inspiration.

And speaking of resilience, in case you’re wondering, our 1.5-year-old Ryan is WAAAAAAY more of a handful than Josh is, even with two full leg casts just a week after surgery! It’s not even a contest. Shawn and I often laugh about the stark contrast in their energy levels. Ryan is at that age where they are so incredibly cute and charming, but simultaneously, it feels like you’re attempting to wrangle a highly energetic, slightly unpredictable drunk monkey. His boundless energy and constant motion keep us on our toes, a true testament to the demanding yet utterly endearing nature of toddlerhood.

This short video clip captures less than one minute of my entire day trying to keep up with him. He simply cannot be contained! Hahaha! Gosh, I love him dearly, despite the constant whirlwind of activity he brings to our lives. His zest for life is infectious, even if it leaves us utterly exhausted by the end of each day.

We’re now counting down the days – just two more weeks with casts for Josh! February is going to be entirely dedicated to helping him regain his walking abilities, a significant and exciting milestone in his recovery journey. We’re filled with optimism and determination for the path ahead. Big hugs to all our friends and readers!
