Five Fresh Finds for Friday

Carmel

Our recent weekend escape to the enchanting town of Carmel-by-the-Sea was nothing short of magical, shared with my wonderful sister, Nicole, and her husband, Ken. The Northern California coast truly outdid itself, offering us the most exquisite weather imaginable – a crisp yet inviting 65 degrees Fahrenheit under an endless expanse of clear, sunny skies. It truly underscored our belief that autumn is undeniably the prime season to explore this picturesque stretch of coastline. The air was filled with a refreshing coolness, perfect for leisurely strolls along the scenic pathways and taking in the breathtaking ocean views without the bustling summer crowds. Every moment felt like a scene from a postcard, from the charming architecture that gives Carmel its unique European village feel to the serene beauty of the Pacific Ocean meeting the rugged coast. The gentle ocean breeze and the golden sunlight created an idyllic setting for relaxation and exploration, making our visit exceptionally memorable.

Beyond the stunning scenery, our taste buds embarked on a delightful journey. We indulged in an array of delicious food, sampling everything from fresh local seafood to gourmet culinary creations that perfectly captured the essence of coastal California dining. Each meal was a memorable experience, a testament to Carmel’s vibrant gastronomic scene. What truly surprised and delighted us, however, was the discovery of just how many incredible wine tasting rooms are nestled discreetly within this charming town. Having visited Carmel numerous times over the years, I’m genuinely astonished that this vibrant aspect of the town had eluded me for so long! The variety and quality of wines available for tasting, often sourced from the renowned vineyards of the Santa Lucia Highlands and other premium California appellations, made for an unforgettable afternoon activity. Each tasting room offered a unique ambiance, allowing us to savor exquisite local varietals, particularly their celebrated Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, in a relaxed and inviting setting. It was an immersive experience, learning about the region’s viticulture while enjoying lively conversations and making new memories. For anyone planning a visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea, exploring these wonderful tasting rooms is an absolute must-do; it’s an essential part of the Carmel experience that adds another layer of sophistication and enjoyment to your getaway. We left feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and already dreaming of our next coastal adventure, perhaps to uncover even more of Carmel’s hidden treasures.

Gruendl Family

The joy of our Carmel getaway flowed seamlessly into a heartwarming family gathering upon our return home on Sunday. As soon as we unpacked, Shawn’s thoughtful cousin, Ashley, extended an impromptu invitation: “Would you like to come over for some wine and dinner?” After a wonderful weekend of travel and exploration, the idea of a night off from cooking was incredibly appealing – a resounding “Yes, please!” was our immediate response. What began as a casual dinner invitation quickly blossomed into a delightful and spontaneous family party, proving once again that some of the best moments are unplanned. The evening truly came alive as Shawn’s brothers, along with his sister-in-law, joined us, followed by our dear cousin Amy, Shawn’s parents, and even his beloved Uncle and Aunt. The house soon buzzed with laughter, lively conversations, and the unmistakable warmth that only a large, close-knit family can create. It was a beautiful culmination to our weekend, transitioning from the serene beauty of the coast to the comforting embrace of loved ones and the familiar rhythm of home.

The atmosphere was incredibly relaxed and filled with genuine happiness. We shared stories from our Carmel trip, caught up on each other’s week’s happenings, and simply reveled in the collective presence of so many cherished family members. Ashley had prepared a delicious spread of home-cooked comfort food, which tasted even better knowing we hadn’t lifted a finger in the kitchen. Glasses clinked with good wine, and the air was thick with camaraderie and affection, punctuated by bursts of shared humor and nostalgic tales. Moments like these truly underscore how fortunate we are. Living within just a few minutes’ drive of such an extensive and loving family network is a blessing we never take for granted. It means constant opportunities for spontaneous get-togethers, a strong support system always close at hand for any situation, and an abundance of shared memories being made, enriching our lives immeasurably. This particular evening was a beautiful reminder of the strength and joy that family bonds bring, making our return home feel even more special and complete, and reinforcing the priceless value of kinship.

Dinner at Starbelly

Mid-week brought another exciting adventure, this time to the vibrant heart of San Francisco, where my mom, sister, and I embarked on a highly anticipated outing: Andy Cohen’s book tour. For the three of us, our admiration for Bravo TV is not just a casual interest; it’s a full-blown obsession, and naturally, our affection for the charismatic Andy Cohen runs deep. The excitement had been building for weeks, and the prospect of seeing him live was truly thrilling. To make the evening even more special, we planned a delightful pre-show dinner in the city. We chose Starbelly, a fantastic restaurant known for its delicious farm-to-table cuisine, located in the charming Hayes Valley neighborhood. The ambiance was perfect for our girls’ night out – lively yet intimate, allowing us to chat excitedly about the upcoming event over a wonderful meal featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. We savored every bite, anticipating the main event with growing enthusiasm, soaking in the energetic pulse of the city around us as dusk settled over San Francisco.

After a satisfying dinner, we made our way to the iconic Castro Theater, a historic landmark renowned for its opulent interior, grand organ, and rich cultural legacy within San Francisco. The theater was buzzing with fellow Bravo enthusiasts, creating an electrifying atmosphere of shared excitement and adoration for Andy Cohen. The evening kicked off with a captivating one-on-one interview between Andy and the incredibly talented Rashida Jones, a discussion that spanned a full hour and offered fascinating insights into his career, personal life, and, of course, the world of Bravo. Both were incredibly engaging, sharing candid anecdotes and perspectives that resonated deeply with the audience, making for an hour of pure entertainment and enlightenment. Following the insightful interview, Andy graciously stayed to sign books for everyone in attendance. Despite the massive crowd, the event organizers had an incredibly efficient system in place, moving the line along at an impressive pace to ensure everyone had a chance. While this meant our individual interaction was fleeting – a mere second or so – it was still an absolutely thrilling moment. We managed to quickly snap a selfie with Andy, which, while perhaps not picture-perfect in its composition, was absolutely priceless: “bad, but better than no picture at all!” It was a quick flash, a brief shared smile and exchange, and then we were ushered along. Andy Cohen, with his infectious charisma and genuine warmth, truly lives up to his reputation. He has an undeniable connection with his fans, and even that brief encounter solidified our belief that he is, quite simply, the best. It was an unforgettable night, a perfect blend of delicious food, engaging conversation, and a memorable encounter with a true pop culture icon in a truly iconic setting.

Andy Cohen Book Signing

This past week has been a whirlwind of creativity and productivity for me, transforming me into a veritable photo editing machine! It felt incredibly good to dive deep into my workflow and tackle a significant backlog, marking a crucial period for my photography business. The previous Sunday afternoon set the tone, as I dedicated several focused hours to two distinct holiday photo portrait sessions. These sessions were filled with festive cheer and the wonderful challenge of capturing unique family moments, from joyful children to loving couples, all against beautiful, seasonally themed backdrops. The true magic, however, often happens in post-production, and I spent diligent hours carefully curating, color correcting, enhancing, and retouching each individual image to perfection. My goal was to ensure that every client received a gallery of stunning, high-quality photographs that they would cherish for years to come, encapsulating the spirit of their special moments. The satisfaction of meticulously refining each shot, bringing out the best in every expression and detail, is immense. It’s a delicate balance of technical skill and artistic vision, ensuring the final product truly reflects the emotion and beauty of the original moment.

The momentum continued relentlessly as I poured my energy into editing. Not only did I successfully complete and deliver those two holiday portrait sessions within a tight timeframe, but I also achieved a monumental milestone that brought a wave of relief: finishing the editing for my very last wedding of the year! Woo hoo! The feeling of crossing that final wedding off my list is indescribable – a potent mix of relief, accomplishment, and sheer joy. Wedding photography is an intense, demanding, yet incredibly rewarding field, and the editing process alone is a marathon of dedication, often requiring hundreds of hours of focused, detailed work. To have all these major projects “turned in” and delivered to happy clients before the year’s end is an immense professional triumph and a sign of a highly productive season. It marks the successful conclusion of a busy and fulfilling period of client work. With my client work now officially wrapped up for the foreseeable future, the big question looms: What exactly am I going to do with all of this newfound free time? The possibilities feel endless, but let’s be honest, knowing my preferences and desire for some much-needed relaxation, the most likely answer involves settling down with a cozy blanket, a comforting beverage, and probably indulging in a well-deserved binge-watch of my favorite Real Housewives franchise, ha! It’s the perfect way to unwind and recharge after such an intense period of creative and demanding work.

My weekly trip to Costco usually includes a rather specific item for our backyard wildlife: a substantial, 50-pound bag of wild bird seed. This particular blend is specifically chosen to cater to our regular visitors – the majestic wild turkeys that frequently grace our property with their presence. They’ve become quite accustomed to this particular treat, and it’s always a pleasure to watch them gather and forage peacefully in our yard. However, this week’s Costco run presented an unexpected turn of events that threw a wrench into my routine. To my surprise and slight consternation, the usual wild bird seed was nowhere to be found on the shelves. Instead, I noticed a prominently displayed, equally large bag of organic chicken feed. In a moment of what seemed like perfectly logical reasoning – after all, turkeys are essentially large, domesticated fowl, not entirely dissimilar to chickens in their general appearance and foraging habits – I decided to take a chance. “Turkeys are basically big chickens,” I mused, convincing myself that they would surely appreciate the organic chicken feed as a suitable and healthy substitute. It seemed like a perfectly sensible solution to my bird seed dilemma at the time, especially considering the generous quantity and organic quality of the chicken feed on offer.

Boy, was I wrong! My well-intentioned assumption proved to be entirely incorrect, much to my chagrin and the turkeys’ apparent dismay. Despite my hopeful efforts to entice them, the wild turkeys have, unequivocally, refused to touch the organic chicken feed. They approach it with palpable suspicion, peck at it once or twice with evident disinterest, perhaps even a hint of disdain, and then quickly move on, leaving the massive pile virtually untouched and my good intentions unappreciated. It seems their palates are far more refined and specific than I gave them credit for, or perhaps their dietary needs are simply too distinct from those of farm-raised chickens to accept such a substitution. And now, I find myself with a truly enormous, 50-pound bag of organic chicken feed, completely unused and taking up valuable space in my storage, with absolutely no practical use for it whatsoever in our household. It’s a rather amusing, albeit slightly inconvenient, predicament. You know, when you stop to think about it, finding yourself with an abundance of unwanted chicken feed because the local wild turkeys are simply too discerning for your well-meaning but misguided offering… that truly is the definition of a first-world problem, *wink*. It’s a humorous little anecdote that serves as a gentle reminder of life’s minor absurdities and the occasional folly of making assumptions, even when they seem perfectly reasonable at the time. Lesson learned: always stick to the tried and true wild bird seed for our particular feathered friends if you want them to dine in your yard!
