As the calendar flips to a brand new year, ushering in not just a fresh twelve months but an entirely new decade, the air crackles with the promise of exciting possibilities. This is a time for reinvention, for setting ambitious goals, and for embracing a renewed sense of purpose. Many of us feel a powerful urge to hit the reset button, to shed old habits and welcome transformative changes. Perhaps you, like me, are eager to embark on a journey towards a healthier, happier self, with a particular focus on losing weight and adopting a more mindful, clean eating lifestyle. It’s a fantastic feeling to envision a future where we are stronger, more energetic, and more in tune with our bodies.

Beyond personal wellness, the start of a new year often brings a desire for order and clarity in our surroundings. With the festive glow of Christmas decorations now neatly packed away, perhaps your home feels noticeably lighter and more spacious, creating a serene canvas for the year ahead. This newfound openness in our living spaces often mirrors the mental and emotional space we create for ourselves when we declutter and reorganize after the holiday season. It’s an opportunity to create environments that inspire peace and productivity, supporting our new aspirations.

However, before we fully immerse ourselves in the exciting plans and resolutions for January, let’s take a cherished moment to look back. December was a month filled with unparalleled joy, heartwarming moments, and truly magical adventures that woven together formed a tapestry of unforgettable family memories. Reflecting on these special times provides a wonderful foundation, grounding us in gratitude and reminding us of the love and connection that enrich our lives as we step forward into this vibrant new chapter.

A Magical Christmas in the Snow: A New Family Tradition Begins

Children playing joyfully in fresh snow outside a cozy cabin, celebrating a snowy Christmas.

Our family embarked on an enchanting winter escape to a charming cabin nestled in the snowy wonderland of Twain Harte, and what followed was nothing short of a magical Christmas week. From the moment we arrived, a sense of cozy tranquility enveloped us, heightened by the crisp, fresh scent of pine and the soft blanket of snow outside. The heart of our cabin experience was undoubtedly the roaring fireplace, its crackling flames casting a warm, golden glow and creating the perfect ambiance for holiday cheer. We had thoughtfully stocked up on an abundance of delicious holiday treats and comforting meals, ensuring that our days were filled with culinary delights that added to the festive spirit.

Christmas morning was a symphony of joyous laughter and eager anticipation as the boys were absolutely spoiled with an incredible array of new toys, their excitement infectious. Watching their eyes light up with wonder was truly priceless. After the little ones were tucked into bed, the adults cherished their own special time, gathering by the fire to watch festive movies, engage in lively board games, or simply share stories and laughter. These quiet, connected moments were a highlight, allowing us to unwind and deepen our bonds.

The entire experience in Twain Harte resonated so deeply with all of us that we collectively decided this would become our cherished new Christmas tradition. There’s something incredibly special about disconnecting from the everyday hustle, immersing ourselves in nature, and focusing purely on family togetherness during the holidays. The simplicity and warmth of a snowy cabin Christmas created memories that will last a lifetime, and we eagerly anticipate returning year after year to rekindle that unique magic.

Thrilling Sledding Adventures and Our Delightful Snowman Creation

The fresh snow provided the perfect playground for endless winter fun, and our boys absolutely adored sledding! We made it a daily ritual, heading out for at least an hour each day to conquer the snowy hills. The sheer exhilaration on their faces as they zipped down the slopes was pure magic, their delighted squeals echoing through the quiet winter landscape. While it was undeniably fun, I must confess, carrying those energetic boys and the sleds back up the hill repeatedly turned into a significant, albeit enjoyable, workout! It truly tested my endurance, but the joy it brought them made every climb worthwhile.

Beyond the thrills of sledding, we also embraced another classic winter activity: building a snowman. With rosy cheeks and bundled in layers, we collaborated to bring our frosty friend to life. Little Josh, with his imaginative spirit, kept asking when our snowman would magically come to life, just like his beloved characters Olaf and Frosty. His innocent questions added an extra layer of sweetness and humor to the entire experience, reminding us of the boundless wonder children find in the simplest things. These moments of collective creation, bundled in warm hats and mittens, are the quintessential memories that define a winter holiday, filled with laughter, fresh air, and the simple beauty of nature.

Revitalizing Ski Days: A Testament to Fitness and Freedom

A couple joyfully skiing down a snowy mountain slope, enjoying their winter sports getaway.

Amidst all the family festivities, Shawn and I were incredibly fortunate to carve out time for three exhilarating ski days during our winter break. This was made possible by my wonderful mom, who truly was an absolute angel, graciously taking on the joyful task of watching the boys. Her support allowed us to step away, reconnect with each other, and indulge in a passion we both deeply enjoy. Gliding down the pristine slopes, feeling the crisp mountain air against our faces, we truly felt like teenagers again, free and unburdened, experiencing the sheer thrill of speed and movement.

These ski days brought with them a particularly exciting non-scale victory, a powerful testament to the dedication we’ve put into our fitness journeys. In previous years, an hour or two on the slopes would typically leave us feeling completely exhausted and sore the next day. However, this time, we skied with sustained energy, not experiencing the usual fatigue. Even more remarkably, I wasn’t sore at all the day after our outings! This tangible improvement in our stamina and recovery highlights the incredible benefits of being consistently in shape. It’s not just about the numbers on a scale; it’s about the enhanced quality of life, the ability to enjoy activities we love more fully, and the feeling of strength and resilience in our bodies. These moments on the mountain were not just a break, but a powerful affirmation of our commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Sweet Creations: Gingerbread Houses and Festive Fun

Children happily decorating gingerbread houses with colorful candies and frosting.

Our holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the delightful tradition of decorating gingerbread houses, and once again, a huge thanks goes to Trader Joe’s for their amazing gingerbread house kits! These kits make the activity incredibly accessible and fun for everyone. The boys absolutely loved the entire process, their eyes wide with excitement as they meticulously (or not so meticulously!) arranged candies and frosting. The creative chaos that ensued was pure joy, a hallmark of holiday crafting with young children.

True to form, a significant portion of the colorful decorations found their way into hungry little mouths long before they ever made it onto the gingerbread houses themselves! It’s an unspoken rule of gingerbread house decorating with kids: snacking on the supplies is part of the fun. Despite the sugary casualties, the laughter and concentration radiating from them were infectious. Even now, weeks later, I’m still discovering stray sprinkles in the most unexpected corners of the house – a sweet, lingering reminder of the festive fun and the joyful mess that accompanies these cherished holiday activities. These moments are less about perfection and more about creating happy, sugar-fueled memories together.

The Charming World of Toddler Talk: Ryan’s “Owie” Phase

Eighteen months is truly a magical age for language development, and our little Ryan has been rapidly expanding his vocabulary, much to our delight. Among his newest and most frequently uttered words is a charming little declaration: “owie.” It’s adorable to hear him say it, often repeating it over and over again, sometimes even when he’s not actually hurt. It’s become a sweet, endearing part of his personality, a simple word that captures so much of his growing awareness and expression.

Of course, as any parent knows, toddler phrases, while cute, can sometimes become a bit… persistent. The boys, particularly Ryan, have taken to proclaiming “owie” with great enthusiasm when we’re driving around. Imagine being stuck in traffic, and from the backseat, a chorus of “owie, owie, owie!” begins. It’s a uniquely chaotic and humorous aspect of daily life with toddlers, and while it’s definitely not the most relaxing soundtrack, it certainly adds a vibrant, if sometimes loud, soundtrack to our family adventures. It’s these small, often humorous, linguistic quirks that make parenting such a fascinating and joy-filled journey.

Ryan’s Latest Feats: “Hello,” Blinks, and More at 18 Months

Along with his adorable “owie” phase, Ryan has added even more charming new tricks to his repertoire, making his 18-month mark an exceptionally delightful period. He can now confidently say “hello,” a sweet greeting that melts hearts, and he’s also mastered the art of blinking on command. These small yet significant developmental leaps are incredibly exciting to witness, showcasing his rapidly growing cognitive and motor skills. Each new word and gesture feels like a tiny window opening into his emerging personality.

It’s moments like these that truly solidify why 18 months is often hailed as the CUTEST age. There’s a perfect blend of babyish charm and burgeoning independence, curiosity bubbling over, and an eagerness to connect and communicate. Ryan’s big, expressive eyes and his earnest attempts to mimic us fill our days with endless joy and laughter. Every day brings a new discovery, a new sound, or a new movement, reminding us to savor these fleeting, precious moments of his early childhood as he continues to learn and grow at an astonishing pace.

Zipline Thrills: Josh’s Favorite Outdoor Adventure

One of the greatest joys of having active boys is discovering their favorite playgrounds and activities. We are incredibly fortunate to have a fantastic park near our house that boasts an exhilarating zipline, and without a doubt, it has become Josh’s absolute FAVORITE attraction! The moment he spots it, his face lights up with pure excitement and anticipation. There’s an undeniable thrill in watching him launch himself from the platform, soaring through the air with a huge grin, feeling the wind in his hair.

Josh’s enthusiasm for the zipline is boundless; he could quite literally ride it all day if we let him! His determination to keep going, climbing back up for another turn again and again, is a testament to the simple, unadulterated joy that outdoor play can bring. It’s a wonderful way for him to expend energy, develop coordination, and experience a sense of adventure in a safe environment. Seeing him so happy and engaged in active play is a constant reminder of how important it is to provide opportunities for children to explore, challenge themselves, and simply have fun outdoors.

Creative Connections: A Delightful Girls’ Night Painting Experience

Three women enjoying a painting class together during a fun girls' night out.

Maintaining strong connections with the important women in my life is something I deeply value, which is why my sister, mom, and I make a concerted effort to have a dedicated girls’ night out once a month. These evenings are truly a highlight, filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and the shared joy of simply being together. It’s a precious opportunity to step away from our daily responsibilities and nourish our relationships.

This past month, we decided to embark on a wonderfully creative adventure. We started the evening with a delicious dinner, enjoying good food and even better company, before heading to Pinot’s Palette for a painting class. It had been far too long since I’d picked up a paintbrush, and I had completely forgotten how much fun it is to unleash your inner artist! The atmosphere was vibrant and encouraging, allowing us to relax, experiment with colors, and create something beautiful, regardless of our artistic skill level. It was a refreshing reminder that embracing creative outlets and making time for cherished loved ones are essential ingredients for a well-rounded and joyful life.

Cherished Bonds: A Daughter Night Out with Dad

A daughter and her father smiling during a special father-daughter date night.

While my mom and I frequently enjoy special date nights together, my sister recently had a brilliant idea that blossomed into a truly heartwarming experience: she took my dad out for a dedicated father-daughter date, and it was absolutely wonderful! This simple yet profound gesture sparked a realization in me. We always prioritize our “mom dates,” but it suddenly occurred to me, “Hey, we should be having dates with dad too!” It’s so easy to fall into established routines, but moments like these remind us to be intentional about nurturing all our family relationships.

I love my parents so incredibly much, and as time passes, the importance of soaking up as many precious moments with them as I possibly can becomes increasingly clear. These one-on-one outings create unique opportunities for deeper connection, shared laughter, and invaluable conversations that strengthen our family bonds in profound ways. Witnessing my sister and dad enjoy their special time together was a beautiful reminder to create more of these intentional, loving experiences, cherishing every memory we make.

Holiday Magic: Ice Skating, Santa, and Family Fun

To fully immerse ourselves in the festive spirit, we took the boys to the enchanting outdoor holiday ice skating rink near our town. The atmosphere was absolutely magical, with twinkling lights and cheerful holiday music filling the air. Josh instantly fell in love with it, especially with the adorable little seal he could sit on while we pushed him across the ice. It allowed him to experience the joy of gliding without the challenge of balancing, making it a truly delightful experience for him.

Poor little Ryan, however, was still a bit too small to safely go skating. So, Shawn and I took turns, with one of us pushing Josh on his seal and the other hanging out with Ryan, making sure he felt just as much a part of the fun. In a truly sweet moment, Shawn managed to sneak Ryan onto the ice for just a second, fulfilling his baby boy’s dream of touching the frozen surface – a tiny, memorable victory! After our icy adventure, we made our way to see Santa Claus, and to our utter delight (and relief!), neither of the boys cried! It was a triumphant win, capturing perfect festive photos and reinforcing the magical memories of a wonderful holiday outing.

Twinkling Wonders: Christmas Lights with Cherished Family

A family enjoying a festive Christmas light display at Fairyland.

The holiday season provided a wonderful opportunity for extended family to gather and celebrate, filling our home and days with even more warmth and laughter. Shawn’s dad was in town, and we were thrilled to be joined by one of his brothers and his sister for a special outing to Fairyland. During Christmas, Fairyland transforms into a breathtaking spectacle, adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and featuring its very own Santa Claus. We made it a mission to experience as many festive activities as we could here in the vibrant Bay Area, and this magical evening was definitely a highlight.

On another enchanting evening, we continued our quest for holiday cheer by visiting a spectacular Christmas Light Show at the local fairgrounds with my side of the family. This event offered a fantastic array of entertainment for everyone. Josh was absolutely thrilled with the assortment of carnival rides, his squeals of delight echoing through the festive air. For little Ryan, the gentle train ride was a perfect, captivating adventure, his eyes wide with wonder at the moving lights and festive scenes. These gatherings, filled with dazzling lights, joyful rides, and the warmth of family, truly encapsulated the magic of the season and created a treasure trove of lasting memories for all of us.

A Bittersweet Milestone: Ryan Has Officially Weaned

A mother holding her baby, symbolizing the end of a breastfeeding journey.

December brought with it a significant and somewhat bittersweet milestone for our family: Ryan officially turned 18 months old on the 23rd, and remarkably, that very week, he self-weaned! It felt like such perfect timing, a natural conclusion to a deeply personal and cherished journey. Breastfeeding my babies has always been an incredibly special experience for me, and I am immensely proud that we made it this far with Ryan. My personal goal for each of my children has always been to reach the one-year mark, and to have surpassed it felt like a true accomplishment.

There was a period where I honestly thought I might be nursing Ryan until he started college, half-joking, of course, but it sometimes felt that way! However, a few months ago, I began offering him organic lactose-free whole milk in a bottle, and gradually, he developed a clear preference for it over nursing. While I loved and cherished every single second of our nursing journey – the quiet moments of connection, the comfort it provided – there’s also a profound sense of regaining my body back to myself. It’s a testament to his growing independence and another beautiful chapter in his development, marking a healthy and natural transition for both of us.

The Daily Delight: Wrestling with Daddy

In our household, one of the boys’ absolute favorite activities is engaging in energetic wrestling matches and jumping around with Daddy. This often happens right when I’m in the midst of preparing dinner, turning the kitchen into a lively arena of boisterous play. The sound of their laughter, the thud of playful tumbles, and the sheer delight emanating from them are a constant backdrop to our evenings. It’s a wonderful, chaotic symphony of father-son bonding.

I absolutely adore that I managed to capture one of these ordinary yet profoundly precious moments on video. It’s the kind of spontaneous, daily interaction that defines the vibrant energy of our family life. These aren’t staged or planned events; they are organic bursts of joy and connection that occur almost every single day. Watching them interact, seeing the pure love and excitement in their rough-and-tumble play, fills my heart. These are the moments, these seemingly small, everyday interactions, that truly make me appreciate and love our life together so deeply.

Celebrating a Major Fitness Milestone: The 100 Club!

A woman celebrating a significant weight loss achievement, showing a confident and happy expression.

This past December brought a truly monumental and deeply personal weight loss goal achievement for me, one that I have been working tirelessly towards. For the first time since 2007, my weight officially starts with a 1! On December 8th, I proudly hit the coveted “100 club,” weighing in at 198.5 pounds. This wasn’t just a number on the scale; it was a profound affirmation of consistency, hard work, and unwavering dedication to my health and well-being. The feeling of reaching this milestone was incredibly empowering and emotional.

To have my weight begin with a “1” during the start of this new decade feels like a symbolic fresh start, a powerful harbinger of the healthy lifestyle I am committed to maintaining. It represents more than just pounds lost; it signifies improved energy, greater confidence, and the ability to fully participate in life with my active boys. Even if it was just for the last three weeks of the year, hitting this target provided immense motivation and validated every healthy choice and every challenging workout. This achievement is a cornerstone of my ongoing journey, proving that with perseverance, significant personal goals are truly attainable.

Breaking Records: My Fastest Jogging Pace Yet!

A woman smiling after a successful solo jog, dressed in athletic wear.

Another exciting personal victory on my fitness journey unfolded recently when I headed out for a solo jog, a rare treat while Shawn took the boys for a walk in the stroller. The absence of the stroller, along with its precious cargo, allowed me to truly push myself, and I ended up setting my fastest jogging pace ever! It was an exhilarating feeling to move with such freedom and speed, reminding me of the sheer power and capability of my body when unencumbered. The sense of accomplishment was immense, further fueling my motivation.

While it’s amazing how fast I can jog without the added weight, I want to emphasize that I truly do love having my boys near me, even when it means pushing easily 100+ pounds of kids and stroller. Those stroller workouts are incredible in their own right, providing a fantastic, challenging workout that blends fitness with family time. Each type of run offers its unique benefits, contributing to my overall strength and endurance. And speaking of workouts, if you’re in need of a good laugh, be sure to watch this incredibly funny story that unfolded during that very same weekend, proving that life with kids always keeps things interesting and often hilariously unpredictable!
