Vibrant Carrots at the Farmer's Market, perfect for manual mode photography practice

Mastering Manual Mode: A Photographer’s Journey at the Farmer’s Market

There’s an undeniable charm about Saturday mornings spent at the local farmer’s market. The vibrant colors of fresh produce, the bustling energy of vendors, and the genuine smiles of community members create an atmosphere unlike any other. For an aspiring photographer like myself, it’s also an unparalleled outdoor classroom. This past Saturday, my partner Shawn and I ventured down to our town’s market, not just for fresh ingredients, but for an immersive photography lesson. My goal: to further hone my skills in manual mode, tackling the ever-changing and unpredictable lighting scenarios that outdoor environments present.

The transition from shooting still life food in a controlled studio setting to capturing dynamic scenes outdoors feels like moving from a calm pond to a raging river. Indoors, with carefully positioned lights and static subjects, adjusting camera settings feels like a piece of cake. But out in the open, where sunlight shifts, shadows dance, and subjects move, it’s a constant juggling act of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The challenge, however, is precisely what makes it so rewarding. When you finally nail that shot – the one where the light is perfect, the colors pop, and the moment is frozen just right – there’s an incredible rush of accomplishment. It makes all the frantic adjustments and missed shots worthwhile. Shawn, with his years of experience, is far more adept at this on-the-fly decision-making than I am, and he’s patiently guiding me through the intricacies of advanced photography.

His teaching method is wonderfully effective, much like a series of “fire drills” for photographers. He’ll observe a scene and issue a challenge: “Okay, go photograph those heirloom carrots basking in full shade. Pay attention to how the lack of direct light affects your exposure.” Then, “Now, pivot and capture those brilliant sunflowers bathed in full, harsh sunlight. How will you prevent blown-out highlights?” The scenarios continued: “Try to get a crisp shot of that flag waving vigorously in the breeze – remember to adjust your shutter speed accordingly!” These rapid-fire exercises force me to think critically and react instinctively to different lighting and movement conditions. It’s an intensive learning curve, but one that yields tangible results. Every successful shot, every correctly adjusted setting, builds confidence and embeds the principles of manual photography deeper into my understanding.

Among the many images I captured that morning, the close-up of these organic carrots stands out as one of my absolute favorites. It perfectly encapsulates the freshness and earthy beauty of the market. And yes, I’ll admit, it took more than a few attempts to get it just right. Let’s just say, my camera’s memory card saw upwards of twenty versions before this gem emerged. But that’s the nature of photography – perseverance, experimentation, and a keen eye for detail eventually pay off. The journey from multiple attempts to a single, perfect image is a testament to learning and growth.

Rustic Old Wagon Wheel, highlighting unique composition in street photography

Another shot from our market adventure that elicited a rare nod of approval from Shawn was this picture of an old wagon wheel. He was particularly impressed with the composition – a high compliment coming from him! I can still hear his slight chuckle as he recounted witnessing me contort myself into position. For those wondering about the dedication required for unique perspectives, picture this: me, lying on my stomach on the bustling sidewalk just outside the farmer’s market, camera angled low, trying to capture the rustic beauty of this antique artifact. Sometimes, getting the perfect shot means embracing awkward angles and drawing a few curious glances. It’s a small price to pay for a photograph that tells a story and captures a moment from an unexpected viewpoint. This particular image, with its weathered textures and sense of history, reminds me that beauty can be found in the simplest, most overlooked details if you’re willing to look for it.

Summer Fun Kicks Off: Our Cornhole Obsession and Outdoor Gatherings

Friends playing Cornhole outdoors, a classic summer game

If you’ve ever played cornhole, you know the infectious joy and competitive spirit it brings out. For Shawn and me, it’s more than just a game; it’s a cherished ritual, a symbol of relaxed summer days and shared laughter. We are absolutely obsessed! Our cornhole journey began quite memorably when Shawn, with his knack for carpentry and DIY projects, built us a bespoke cornhole set. This beautifully crafted set became a standout feature at our wedding reception, providing endless entertainment for our guests and adding a wonderfully personal touch to our special day. It turned out to be one of the best ideas we had for the reception, and its sentimental value has only grown over time.

Fast forward to today, and that very same cornhole set is still a staple in our lives. We regularly dust it off and set it up for impromptu gatherings, especially with my sister Nicole and her husband Ken. There’s something truly magical about spending an afternoon or evening outdoors, with good music playing in the background, a gentle breeze, and the satisfying thud of beanbags hitting the board. These moments of friendly competition and relaxed camaraderie are what we live for. Sunday marked the first time we’d broken out the cornhole set all year, and it was a moment of pure delight. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and the familiar sound of beanbags sailing through the air instantly brought a wave of summer cheer. It was the unofficial start to our summer season, and we couldn’t be happier. We envision many more sunny afternoons and starlit evenings filled with throws, cheers, and plenty of “hole-in-one” celebrations.

Capturing Love Stories: An Enchanting Engagement Shoot on a Ranch

Beautiful outdoor engagement session on a ranch, highlighting natural light photography

This past weekend was also dedicated to a truly special project: an engagement photoshoot for one of the wonderful couples whose wedding we have the privilege of photographing and filming in August. Engagement sessions are always a joy, offering us the chance to connect with couples on a more personal level, understand their dynamic, and capture the authentic spark of their love before the big day. The location for this particular shoot was simply breathtaking. The couple’s family owns a truly gorgeous ranch, a sprawling expanse of natural beauty that provided an incredible backdrop for their love story. The vast open fields, rustic fences, and golden hour light created an atmosphere of pure romance and serenity, which translated into some truly stunning photographs.

We spent the afternoon exploring the ranch, finding hidden nooks and picturesque spots that perfectly complemented their personalities. The natural setting allowed for candid moments and genuine emotions to shine through, which are always the most beautiful to capture. Among the many beautiful images we created, the one shown here has quickly become one of my favorites. The way the light falls, the natural poses, and the genuine affection between them are all perfectly encapsulated. It’s a timeless image that speaks volumes about their connection. For those eager to see more of our work, I shared a few additional favorites from this enchanting session on our Acorn Films Facebook page. We’re incredibly excited to capture their wedding day later this summer, knowing that their engagement photos are just a preview of the beautiful memories we’ll help them create.

A Much-Needed Date Night: Sushi, Cinema, and Wes Anderson

In the whirlwind of work, projects, and daily life, carving out time for a dedicated date night can feel like a luxurious rarity. So, when Shawn and I managed to plan one last week, it felt like a truly special occasion. The simple act of showering, doing my hair and makeup, and getting dressed up in something cute and comfortable felt like a treat in itself – a welcome change from my usual casual attire. For our evening out, we decided on a delightful culinary adventure first. We indulged in some delicious sushi, savoring the fresh flavors and the artful presentation that makes Japanese cuisine so unique. It’s always a fantastic choice for a relaxed yet special meal, allowing for good conversation and shared enjoyment.

After satisfying our appetites, we headed to the cinema to catch a film we’d both been eager to see: “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” As avid admirers of Wes Anderson’s distinctive cinematic style, we knew we were in for a visual and narrative treat. The film did not disappoint! Its quirky humor, meticulously crafted set designs, vibrant color palettes, and charming ensemble cast made for a truly enchanting experience. Wes Anderson has a magical way of creating worlds that are both whimsical and deeply human, and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is a prime example of his genius. Date nights like these, combining delicious food with captivating storytelling, are essential for reconnecting and recharging. They remind us to pause, enjoy each other’s company, and appreciate the simple pleasures that life has to offer, away from the daily hustle.

The Joyful Antics of Our Furry Friends: The “Rolley-Rolley” Phenomenon

There’s nothing quite like the pure, unadulterated joy that pets bring into our lives. And when it comes to expressing that joy, our dogs have a particularly endearing ritual we affectionately call “rolley-rolley.” This phenomenon involves them throwing themselves onto the grass, rolling around with an intensity that can only be described as ecstatic abandon. Their legs flail, their tails wag furiously, and their bodies twist and turn, seemingly absorbed in the sheer delight of contact with the earth. It’s a spontaneous burst of happiness that never fails to make me laugh out loud, no matter how many times I witness it.

The other day, our dogs had a particularly epic “rolley-rolley” session on the front lawn. It was a spectacle of wagging tails and happy barks, a perfect reminder of the simple, unburdened pleasures of life. You can watch their hilarious antics in the video below. As you’ll notice, our smallest companion, Max, is the only one who consistently needs to wear a leash when outside. Despite his adorable demeanor, Max is still very much a free spirit with a penchant for adventure. He’s a little guy who, we’re quite sure, would bolt across the street at the first opportunity if given the chance. His boundless energy and curiosity are charming, but they also necessitate a bit of extra caution and responsible pet ownership on our part to ensure his safety. Observing their “rolley-rolley” moments, however, is a wonderful way to unwind and appreciate the innocent happiness our dogs bring to our lives.
