There’s something truly magical about the crisp autumn air in California, especially when it calls us back to the breathtaking beauty of Big Sur. This past weekend, Shawn and I continued our cherished tradition, heading out for our annual camping pilgrimage to the spectacular Fernwood Resort. Big Sur, with its dramatic coastline, towering redwood forests, and the serene symphony of nature, never ceases to captivate our hearts. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment, surrounded by some of the most stunning landscapes our state has to offer. The drive itself is an experience, winding along Highway 1 with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean that are simply unparalleled.

Fernwood Resort holds a very special place in our hearts, so much so that we make sure to visit at least once a year. What truly sets it apart for us is the idyllic little creek that meanders directly through the campsite. To secure our perfect spot right by the water, we always make sure to call far, far in advance. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the gentle gurgle of the stream, enjoying our morning coffee with that soothing soundtrack, and spending our days with the peaceful sounds of nature as our backdrop. It’s an unparalleled sense of tranquility that instantly washes away the stresses of everyday life. The resort itself offers a charming blend of rustic comfort and modern amenities, making it the ideal base for exploring the surrounding natural wonders, whether it’s hiking through ancient groves or simply relaxing by the water’s edge.

Our Big Sur escapade wouldn’t be complete without the delightful company of my sister Nicole and her wonderful husband Ken. It sometimes feels like we’re inseparable, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way! The four of us share such a strong bond, and these camping trips are always filled with laughter, shared stories, and plenty of friendly competition during our board game sessions by the campfire. There’s a unique warmth that comes from sitting around a crackling fire, enveloped by the cool night air, sharing delicious s’mores and recounting tales from our lives and travels. We spent hours simply talking, observing the stars, and soaking in the quietude that only Big Sur can offer. It was another absolutely wonderful October weekend here in California, reminding us once again why these traditions are so important to us, creating memories that we will cherish until our next adventure.

As we transition deeper into autumn, I’m finding myself unexpectedly embracing the earlier sunsets. While it certainly presents a unique challenge for food photography – a passion of mine that thrives on abundant natural light – there’s an undeniable charm to the days drawing in sooner. Capturing that perfect culinary shot now requires a bit more planning, perhaps an earlier start to the day, strategic use of reflectors, or even dabbling with artificial softbox lighting, pushing my creative boundaries in new and exciting ways. Adapting to the seasonal light changes is a constant learning curve, but it also sparks innovation in my craft, leading to unique and often more dramatic food shots.

However, the trade-off for these photographic adjustments is more than worth it. When the sun dips below the horizon by 7 PM, a serene calmness seems to settle over our home. Shawn and I have found ourselves becoming delightfully sleepy much earlier than usual, often drifting off to sleep at a more respectable hour. It’s a wonderful rhythm, a gentle nudge from nature encouraging us to rest and recharge. This natural shift in our sleep cycle feels incredibly refreshing, contributing to a sense of well-being that often eludes us during the longer, more energetic summer days. The earlier evenings mean more time for unwinding, reading, or simply enjoying a quiet night in. And speaking of sunsets, just look at this incredible spectacle I managed to capture recently! The sky was ablaze with a palette of fiery oranges, soft purples, and deep reds, a truly mesmerizing display that reminded me of the unparalleled artistry of the natural world. My admiration for Lena Dunham runs deep; I am, to put it mildly, absolutely obsessed with her work! Her groundbreaking series, Girls, is a show I’ve revisited at least twice from start to finish – and yes, Shawn has gamely watched every episode with me, a testament to its compelling storytelling and brilliant writing (*wink*). What resonates with me most about Lena’s work is her unapologetic honesty, her ability to delve into complex female friendships, and her unique voice in contemporary storytelling. She challenges norms and sparks conversations, which I find incredibly inspiring as a creative individual myself. So, when I discovered she was coming to San Francisco for her highly anticipated book tour, there was no hesitation. I immediately bought tickets the minute they became available, determined not to miss the opportunity to see one of my creative heroes in person and hear her insights firsthand.

I attended the event with my wonderful girlfriend Logan, and we made a proper evening of it, starting with a delightful dinner and some refreshing drinks before heading over. We were absolutely thrilled to post our newest wedding video yesterday, and the response has been incredible! It truly feels like with each project, our work keeps getting better and better, a testament to our dedication and passion for capturing these precious moments. Shawn, in particular, pours his heart and soul into the editing process, meticulously crafting each frame to tell a unique love story. His eye for detail, his knack for selecting the perfect musical scores that enhance the emotional arc, and his ability to weave together raw footage into an emotional and cinematic narrative truly shines through in every finished product. We are constantly learning, evolving our techniques, and striving to deliver not just a video, but a timeless memory that our couples will cherish for a lifetime. The satisfaction of seeing a couple’s joy reflected in our work is immeasurable.

This particular video, while beautiful, comes with a rather funny (and slightly harrowing) backstory. We filmed this wedding on one of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures soaring well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit! The heat was relentless, a true test of endurance for everyone involved, from the wedding party to the vendors. Preparing for outdoor shoots, especially in extreme weather, is always a challenge. We make sure to stay hydrated, seek shade whenever possible, and keep a close eye on everyone’s well-being. Despite our precautions, after the ceremony, which felt like an eternity under the blazing sun, I distinctly remember feeling a wave of intense dizziness and nausea. I’m pretty sure I had a mild case of heat stroke and genuinely thought I was going to throw up right there and then. It was a scramble to find relief; I had to quickly sit down inside, desperately seeking the air conditioning, and proceeded to chug about two bottles of water in rapid succession to rehydrate. It was a tough day, but seeing the finished video, vibrant and full of joy, makes all those challenging moments fade into the background. It’s a powerful reminder that even under the most extreme conditions, our commitment to capturing the essence of a couple’s special day never wavers. We always find a way to make it happen, ensuring their memories are preserved beautifully, no matter the circumstances.
