A California Wine Country Dream: Sheldon & Berleen’s Enchanting Wedding

The air in California’s picturesque wine country was abuzz with joy and romance this past Saturday, marking a truly special occasion for our family. My heart, along with Shawn’s, swelled with happiness as we officially welcomed a wonderful new sister-in-law into our lives. Shawn’s beloved brother, Sheldon, exchanged vows with his beautiful bride, Berleen, in a breathtaking ceremony that perfectly captured the essence of their love story. It was an unforgettable day filled with laughter, tears of joy, and the promise of a beautiful future for the newlyweds. The rolling vineyards and sun-kissed hills provided a stunning backdrop, creating an atmosphere that felt both intimate and grand. Every detail, from the elegant floral arrangements to the warm glow of the evening sun, seemed to conspire to make their wedding day nothing short of magical. {Photo courtesy of Jennifer Bagwell Photography}

Bridesmaids

Being part of Sheldon and Berleen’s special day was an immense honor. I had the privilege of standing by Berleen’s side as a bridesmaid, sharing in her excitement and helping to celebrate her journey into marriage. For those wondering, I’m the one on the far left in the bridesmaid photo, beaming with pride and happiness. Shawn’s sister, Jacquie, also graced the bridal party, positioned gracefully on the far right, making it a true family affair. Shawn, ever the supportive and reliable brother, took on the distinguished role of best man. His responsibilities included everything from organizing the bachelor party to delivering a heartfelt toast that brought both tears and chuckles from the guests. It was a weekend that truly brought our family closer, solidifying the bonds of love and kinship as we watched Sheldon embark on this new chapter with Berleen.

Beyond the Aisle: Our Dual Role as Wedding Party & Videographers

As if being integral members of the wedding party wasn’t enough, Shawn and I embraced an additional, incredibly ambitious challenge: we also filmed the entire wedding for Sheldon and Berleen! As founders of Acorn Films, capturing precious moments is our passion, but doing so while simultaneously fulfilling bridesmaid and best man duties was an exhilarating dance of dedication and multitasking. It was a test of our capabilities, pushing us to blend personal celebration with professional commitment, proving just how much we adore this couple and our craft. The experience offered us a truly unique perspective on the wedding day, allowing us to witness and document every tender glance, every joyful laugh, and every significant moment from both inside and outside the festivities.

The most challenging segment of our dual roles was undoubtedly the ceremony itself. With no possibility of checking on our camera setups during the solemn exchange of vows, meticulous planning was paramount. Shawn, with his characteristic foresight and technical prowess, painstakingly positioned multiple cameras on tripods long before the guests arrived. These strategic placements ensured we captured every angle of the processional, the emotional vows, and the grand recession. But even with the best planning, execution requires help, and we were incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support system. Two of Shawn’s wonderful cousins stepped in as our “camera babysitters,” diligently keeping an eye on the equipment, adjusting focus where needed, and ensuring continuous, pristine footage. My sister, equally invaluable, dedicated her time and talent to filming all the crucial portrait sessions and capturing the candid, heartfelt speeches during the reception. Their assistance was nothing short of heroic; we truly couldn’t have captured such comprehensive and beautiful memories without their selfless efforts and keen eyes. They were absolute lifesavers, allowing us to both participate in and perfectly document this momentous occasion.

Shawn, ever the innovator and master of subtle moves, pulled off a particularly clever maneuver during the ceremony. Knowing the importance of capturing Berleen’s majestic walk down the aisle from a straight-on, intimate perspective, he ingeniously snuck a tiny GoPro camera into his suit pocket. Positioned perfectly, it allowed him to get a unique, unobstructed view as the bride made her grand entrance. I, completely engrossed in the beauty of the moment and my bridesmaid duties, didn’t even notice his secret mission until much later! When I eventually asked him how he managed such stealth, he just gave me that signature, knowing smile of his and replied, “I know! *cleverly smiles* Everyone was looking at the bride, I knew no one would notice it.” It was a testament to his dedication to capturing every perfect shot, even while standing as the best man.

Funnily enough, despite Shawn’s expert stealth, at least one person’s keen eye caught him in the act! His uncle, with perfect comedic timing, managed to snap this candid picture of Shawn holding the GoPro. It just goes to show that even the most well-executed plans can have a delightful, unexpected reveal. This moment added another layer of cherished memory to the day, highlighting the blend of professional dedication and joyful family participation that defined our experience.

Us at the wedding

Between my bridesmaid duties and Shawn’s best man responsibilities, coupled with our efforts to film every precious moment, we were quite literally running around the entire night. The energy of the celebration was infectious, and we were so immersed in the whirlwind of activities that, to my dismay, I completely forgot to take a single picture of just the two of us together! It’s a common wedding day oversight, especially for those so deeply involved, but thankfully, we have amazing family who came to our rescue. Shawn’s incredible cousin, Ashley, and her husband Bryan—the very same dynamic duo who selflessly “babysat” our cameras during the ceremony—thoughtfully snapped this lovely picture of us. A huge shout-out and heartfelt thanks to you, Ash & B! This photo is a treasured reminder of our presence together amidst the beautiful chaos, and we are so grateful for their thoughtfulness in capturing it.

Pre-Wedding Festivities and Unforgettable Moments

Rehearsal Dinner, cornhole

The joyous wedding festivities for Sheldon and Berleen kicked off in earnest on Thursday evening with a delightful rehearsal dinner. It was a relaxed and intimate gathering, providing a perfect prelude to the grand celebration ahead. Family and close friends mingled, shared stories, and enjoyed some delicious food, all set against the serene backdrop of California’s wine region. The atmosphere was incredibly warm and welcoming, filled with anticipation and excitement for the big day.

One of the highlights of the evening was a spirited game of cornhole that Shawn and I, along with our wonderful cousins Ashley and Bryan, eagerly joined. The friendly competition was fierce, but the laughter was even louder. In a surprising turn of events, the “girls team” (Ashley and I) absolutely dominated! This truly is a rare occurrence, I must admit, making our victory all the sweeter. To be fair, we were undeniably in the lead and playing spectacularly well when, feeling satisfied with our winning streak and perhaps a tad bit bored from continuous triumph, Ashley and I decided to declare victory and gracefully retire from the game. But rest assured, it absolutely counts as a win in our books! These lighthearted moments of family fun and friendly rivalry are just as memorable as the more formal events, adding depth and joy to the entire wedding experience.

An Unexpected (and Terrifying!) Interlude

After the cheerful camaraderie of the rehearsal dinner, Shawn and I returned home, looking forward to a quiet evening. As I headed to the bathroom to take a relaxing shower, I was met with an utterly horrifying sight that quickly turned my peaceful plans into a moment of pure terror. Waiting for me, ominously positioned in the bathtub, was THIS massive spider. And when I say massive, I mean truly gargantuan. (Warning for the faint of heart: if you dare to click the link, prepare yourself. There’s a corner of Shawn’s credit card in the original picture for scale, though I had to heavily crop it to protect his number, so its full terrifying scale might be slightly understated.)

My reaction was immediate, visceral, and incredibly loud. If you were anywhere in the vicinity and heard the bloodcurdling scream that erupted from me, you would have undoubtedly thought I was being murdered. I am not exaggerating when I say this creature measured over two inches across – a formidable, hairy, multi-legged nightmare. It was absolutely huge, a monstrous eight-legged invader that looked like it belonged in a horror movie, not my pristine bathtub. The sheer size and unexpected presence of it sent shivers down my spine, rendering me momentarily paralyzed with fear. It was a stark, jarring contrast to the romantic and joyful atmosphere of the wedding festivities, a truly unforgettable (and unwanted!) addition to the week’s events. The incident served as a stark reminder that even amidst the most beautiful moments, life has a way of throwing in unexpected, creepy crawly surprises.

A Sweet Conclusion: The Irresistible Peach Crisp

Peach Crisp

After a week filled with wedding celebrations, logistical challenges, and even a terrifying spider encounter, I found myself craving a return to simpler, sweeter pleasures. The inspiration struck me yesterday after seeing Annie’s delightful post for a blueberry and blackberry crisp. Her recipe ignited an immediate desire to bake something wonderfully summery, a perfect antidote to the week’s emotional rollercoaster. So, yesterday after work, I indulged that craving and did a little baking! For anyone who knows me, this is actually a pretty monumental event, as I rarely venture into the kitchen for baking unless it’s for a major holiday or a special birthday. My baking endeavors are few and far between, making this spur-of-the-moment crisp all the more significant.

Instead of blueberries and blackberries, I decided to swap in juicy, ripe peaches, which I happened to have on hand, along with all the other necessary ingredients. The process was straightforward, and soon, the kitchen was filled with the warm, inviting aroma of cinnamon, oats, and sweet peaches bubbling gently. The resulting peach crisp was absolutely divine – a perfect blend of tender fruit and a crunchy, golden-brown topping. Each spoonful was a taste of summer, comforting and incredibly delicious.

But what made the entire experience even better? Shawn’s reaction when he walked through the door. The moment he stepped inside, his eyes immediately found the crisp cooling on the windowsill, and his face lit up with an expression of pure, unadulterated delight. He was so surprised and thrilled, I honestly thought he was going to propose to me all over again! His genuine happiness and appreciation were truly priceless. It was a beautiful reminder of the simple joys that can enrich our daily lives and the profound impact of small, thoughtful gestures. Perhaps I really should make time to bake for that wonderful fella more often. It might just be the secret ingredient to keeping the magic alive, even after the wedding bells have faded and the spiders have (hopefully) retreated!
