Winter 2019 Everyday Glimpses

A Day in the Life: Juggling the Joys of Motherhood and Work

Welcome to a transparent and intimate peek into a real day in my life, specifically Thursday, March 14, 2019. On this particular day, my energetic eldest son, Josh, was a lively three-and-a-quarter years old, while our sweet youngest, Ryan, was just eight months old. This entry offers an honest blend of the beautiful chaos that comes with mom life and the structured demands of my work life, all captured through candid, straight-from-my-iPhone photographs. For those curious about how other days unfold, you’re invited to explore my previous “Day in the Life” posts for more insights into our family’s journey.

Morning Rituals: Embracing Wellness and Early Connections

5:45 AM – The Dawn’s Gentle Call: Ryan’s Wake-Up and Sacred Snuggles

The day typically begins with the soft stirrings of my littlest one, Ryan, around 5:45 AM. It’s a remarkably peaceful start, especially now that he consistently sleeps through the night – a milestone that feels monumental! Even better, both Ryan and Josh are happily sharing a room, which brings a quiet efficiency to our mornings. My husband, Shawn, is already up and showering, setting his own pace for the day. My first loving task is to gently retrieve Ryan from his crib and bring him to my bed for a tranquil nursing session. These moments are truly sacred; a quiet interlude where we connect, cuddle, and often, he drifts back to sleep in the warmth of my embrace. I then carefully carry him back to his room, hoping he’ll enjoy another hour of precious rest.

6:15 AM – My Morning Obsession: The Power of an In-Home Workout

Once Ryan is settled, I seize this precious window of quiet to focus on myself. I make my bed, quickly get dressed, and then head to our living room for my in-home workout. This routine has become an absolute anchor in my day, something I am genuinely obsessed with. It’s an invigorating and empowering way to initiate the day, not just physically, but mentally. I’ve made a conscious, life-changing decision to refrain from touching my phone first thing in the morning. Instead, this dedicated time is purely for me, a serene space where I can nurture my body and mind before the demands of motherhood fully awaken. This shift has profoundly transformed my mornings, setting a positive and intentional tone for everything that follows.

6:45 AM – Post-Workout Productivity: Tidying Up and Conquering the Inbox

With my workout complete, I feel energized and ready to transition into the day’s tasks. I do a swift tidy-up of the main living areas, a small act that makes a big difference in maintaining a sense of order. Then, I allow myself a focused, quick check of emails, striving for that satisfying “inbox zero.” This brief, efficient burst of work ensures I stay on top of communications without allowing digital distractions to derail my morning flow.

7:15 AM – Family Wake-Up: Hugs, Milk, and Morning Greetings

Around 7:15 AM, Ryan wakes up for the day, and his cheerful sounds often serve as a gentle alarm for Josh. My heart immediately swells with anticipation; there’s nothing quite like going to hug my boys first thing! I prepare Josh’s beloved morning “milk” – a sippy cup filled with almond milk, a comfort he still cherishes. While Josh sips his milk and slowly wakes up in his bed, I settle back to nurse Ryan, savoring these intimate moments with my youngest. Once both boys are fully awake and refreshed, we migrate to the living room for some playful interaction. A cherished morning tradition includes a FaceTime call with Shawn, ensuring Daddy receives his warm good morning greetings before his workday fully takes off.

7:45 AM – Preparing Nourishment: Breakfast and Budding Brotherhood

After showering my boys with big morning hugs, I shift my focus to the kitchen, preparing their breakfast while they continue to play on the living room floor. It’s increasingly heartwarming to observe Ryan and Josh engaging in play together. These moments, when they’re harmoniously lost in their games – which, thankfully, is about 75% of the time, *wink* – are incredibly sweet and a testament to their growing bond.

A busy morning scene: Mom diligently preparing a nutritious breakfast in the kitchen, reflecting a commitment to healthy eating, while her children are happily playing nearby, illustrating the blend of parenting and household tasks.

8:00 AM – A Wholesome Start: Family Breakfast Delights

Breakfast is a cornerstone of our day, providing essential fuel. My plate features two perfectly cooked sunny-side-up eggs nestled over a bed of tender sautéed spinach – a simple yet satisfying meal that supports my energy levels. Josh enjoys a delightful combination of fresh, antioxidant-rich blueberries, a comforting half-piece of toast, and fluffy scrambled eggs. For Ryan, who is still exploring a variety of textures and tastes, I prepare scrambled eggs, soft blueberries, and finely chopped watermelon, ensuring a wholesome and easily digestible meal for his growing needs. We strive for nutritious, balanced meals to kickstart everyone’s day.

8:15 AM – Post-Breakfast Cleanup and Getting Ready for the Day

Mealtime with little ones is often a messy, joyful affair! Ryan, being our enthusiastic eater, usually requires a quick sink bath after breakfast – it’s an efficient and fun way to clean him up. Once he’s fresh and dressed in clean clothes, our attention turns to getting Josh ready for his preschool adventures. The morning moves at a brisk but organized pace, a rhythm we’ve carefully cultivated.

8:30 AM – Preschool Promenade: Enjoying the Outdoors

Today is one of those exceptionally pleasant days that calls for a walk to Josh’s preschool – a small but cherished luxury. We bundle the boys up, as there’s still a delightful crispness in the air, hinting at the imminent arrival of spring. The walk itself is a special opportunity for Josh and me to engage in uninterrupted conversation. I absolutely adore listening to his innocent ponderings and whimsical thoughts about the world around him. Ryan, snug and content in his stroller, happily takes in all the sights and sounds, enjoying the ride as much as we do.

8:50 AM – Saying Farewell (for now) and a Lighter Stroll Home

At the preschool gates, I give Josh the biggest, most heartfelt hug, a sweet ritual before he embarks on his morning learning adventures. Then, it’s time for the walk back home, now with just Ryan in the stroller. The journey back feels considerably lighter without pushing Josh’s energetic 35 pounds – a humorous observation that always brings a smile to my face!

9:10 AM – Sanctuary at Home: Coffee, Naptime, and Morning Reset

Back home, my first order of business is to brew myself a much-anticipated cup of coffee, a moment of personal calm. Next, I nurse Ryan and gently settle him down for his morning nap, hoping for a good, restorative rest. With the house temporarily quiet, I seize the opportunity to clear the breakfast dishes and do a quick tidy-up of the main living area, preparing for the arrival of cherished visitors.

Midday Connections: Family, Creativity, and Productive Tasks

9:30 AM – The Joy of Sisterhood: A Cherished Coffee Date

One of the most anticipated highlights of my day often occurs around 9:30 AM: my beloved mom and sister arrive for our regular coffee date! This is truly one of my favorite parts of the week. We gather comfortably on the couch, sipping our coffees, sharing stories, and laughing freely. These moments of genuine connection and camaraderie with the important women in my life are incredibly refreshing and re-energizing, providing a vital emotional recharge.

10:00 AM – Ryan Joins the Girls’ Gathering

Just as our conversations deepen and laughter fills the room, Ryan wakes up from his nap, bright-eyed and eager to join our “girls’ date.” His cheerful presence adds another layer of joy and sweetness to our gathering, making it even more special.

11:15 AM – Time to Retrieve Josh: The Daily Preschool Pick-Up

My mom and sister begin their departure around 11:15 AM, and my focus immediately shifts to the next scheduled activity: driving to pick up Josh from preschool. The day maintains its gentle, purposeful flow.

11:20 AM – A Happy Reunion and Preschool Tales

Picking up Josh from school is always a heartwarming reunion, sealed with the biggest, most enthusiastic hug. On our drive home, we make sure to call Shawn, and Josh excitedly recounts the day’s adventures and discoveries at preschool. It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear about his world through his innocent and imaginative perspective.

11:25 AM – Art Showcase: Josh’s Preschool Masterpiece

Back home, Josh proudly retrieves the latest piece of art he created at preschool from his tote bag. Each new drawing or craft is a precious testament to his burgeoning creativity and self-expression, always bringing a smile to my face and a moment of shared joy.

11:30 AM – Lunch Preparations: Efficient Multitasking

With everyone accounted for, it’s time to prepare lunch. I cleverly position Ryan in his high chair with some safe, engaging snacks like chickpeas and sliced banana. This strategic move keeps him happily occupied and entertained, allowing me to efficiently prep our family’s meals – a quintessential display of mom-multitasking in action.

A glimpse into efficient parenting: Baby Ryan contentedly enjoying snacks in his high chair, featuring chickpeas and banana, while his mom adeptly prepares lunch, demonstrating skillful multitasking in a busy household.

11:45 AM – Lunchtime Delights and Animated Entertainment

Lunch is finally served! My meal today is a simple yet satisfying combination of tuna with crisp cucumber slices and a tangy pickle. This week, meal prepping didn’t quite happen as planned, meaning I’m creatively “scrounging” through the fridge for quick and healthy lunch options! Josh enjoys a plate featuring crunchy chips, fresh avocado-lime smash, a vibrant half-apple, and a sweet baby bell pepper. For Ryan, I offer homemade baby food – a nutritious blend of butternut squash, chicken, bone broth, and flax meal. During this communal meal, we enjoy a little family entertainment, watching ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ together, adding a fun, relaxed atmosphere to our midday.

12:30 PM – Post-Lunch Cleanup, Minor Mischief, and Bedtime Routines

After lunch, Ryan once again receives a quick sink bath to wash away the remnants of his meal, followed by getting him dressed in clean clothes. While I clean up the lunch dishes, both boys are playing near me. Suddenly, a moment of alarm as Ryan pinches his finger in a drawer, letting out a cry. Josh, startled by the noise, instinctively runs to his room. It’s unclear if it was a genuine accident or if Josh inadvertently closed the drawer on him – a fleeting moment of brotherly mystery! I rush to comfort Ryan with hugs. Soon after, Josh emerges, thoughtfully bringing a pacifier for his little brother, which, ironically, makes me momentarily more suspicious about his role in the incident, haha! Despite the possible mischief, Josh sweetly gives Ryan a kiss, melting my heart. With the immediate crisis resolved, I prepare both boys for their afternoon naps. Josh goes into his bed first, then I nurse Ryan to sleep, easing him into his rest.

12:45 PM – Restoring Order and a Glimmer of Personal Time

With both boys finally settled in their beds for naptime, a precious quiet descends upon the house. I can now complete the lunch cleanup and gather the scattered toys, bringing a welcome sense of order back to our living space. This period of calm is a brief but cherished opportunity for me to transition into my work.

1:00 PM – Digital Catch-Up: Instagram, DMs, and Content Sharing

It’s only now, at 1:00 PM, that I allow myself to engage with my phone for the first time today. I quickly check Instagram, responding to direct messages and scrolling through my feed to catch up on stories from friends and fellow creators. Then, I craft an engaging Instagram story of my own, sharing the delicious Paleo Whole30 Meatloaf recipe that I had posted on Monday, and illustrating how I ingeniously served it to Josh. This blend of personal connection and content creation is an integral part of my professional life, allowing me to connect with my audience and share valuable resources.

1:30 PM – Dedicated Work Block: Emails and Blog Post Creation

Following my brief social media engagement, I transition into a dedicated work block. I meticulously go through my emails, aiming for that satisfying “inbox zero” once more, ensuring all professional communications are addressed. Immediately after, I dive into the heart of my content creation: writing this very blog post. This focused period is crucial for detailing the day’s events, reflecting on my experiences, and crafting engaging content for my readers.

Afternoon Adventures: Productive Prepping and Cherished Family Fun

2:00 PM – Early Wake-Up, Strategic Meal Prep, and Homemade Essentials

Around 2:00 PM, Ryan begins to stir, waking a little earlier than ideal from his nap. I quickly intervene before his cheerful sounds can wake Josh, nurse him, and lie with him, hoping he’ll drift back to sleep. But he’s clearly wide awake and full of playful energy! We head to the living room to engage in some quiet play. I then feed him some healthy snacks in his high chair while I undertake a significant meal prep task: breaking down two whole chickens. This strategic effort provides the culinary foundation for our dinners for the entire upcoming week, saving valuable time later. From the carcasses, I create a fresh batch of nutrient-rich bone broth, meticulously prep tonight’s dinner vegetables, and whip up a new batch of homemade almond milk. This type of efficient kitchen work is paramount for maintaining our family’s commitment to healthy, wholesome eating.

A masterclass in multitasking: Mom diligently breaking down chickens for meal prep, highlighting her commitment to healthy family meals, while baby Ryan happily enjoys snacks in his high chair nearby.

3:00 PM – Shawn’s Return: Family Playtime and Park Preparations

Josh wakes up around 3:00 PM, and Ryan and I greet him with a sippy cup of almond milk to ease him into the afternoon. Shortly after, Shawn arrives home, bringing a welcome surge of energy and smiles. We spend some cherished quality time playing together in the boys’ room. In a particularly sweet moment, Shawn climbs into Josh’s bed with Ryan and lovingly reads him a story, a tender display of their growing bond. While they play, I efficiently clean up the kitchen, preparing it for the evening. Then, as a family, we all get ready for a fun outing to the park.

4:00 PM – Park Adventures: Embracing the Outdoors and Spring’s Promise

We embark on our walk to the local park with the boys, reveling in the absolutely delightful weather. The warmth and light in the air are unmistakable signs that spring is truly just around the corner, painting the day with a sense of renewal. At the park, we immerse ourselves in quintessential family fun: playing in the expansive sandpit, pushing the boys higher on the swings, watching Josh bravely conquer the slide, and letting Ryan explore the soft, inviting grass. Shawn and I use this precious time to catch up on our respective days, sharing stories, insights, and connecting amidst the children’s laughter. Josh, ever the center of attention, frequently interjects with a playful, “Daddy, stop talking to Mommy and play with me!” – a charming and humorous reminder of his boundless energy and desire for engagement.

4:45 PM – Parkside Comfort: Nursing and the Journey Home

Ryan starts to show signs of fussiness around 4:45 PM, a clear indication that his earlier nap wasn’t quite long enough to fully recharge him. I find a quiet, discreet spot in the back of the park to nurse him, providing immediate comfort and a moment of peaceful connection. Refreshed and content, we then begin our leisurely walk back home, continuing to savor the last bits of the beautiful afternoon and preparing for the evening ahead.

5:00 PM – Outdoor Play, California Grilling, and Dinner Preparations

Back home, we extend our outdoor playtime, taking full advantage of the pleasant weather, while Shawn expertly fires up the grill. Living in sunny California affords us the wonderful luxury of grilling even in March – a true culinary delight that we eagerly embrace! The boys flit happily between playing indoors and outdoors, enjoying their freedom. Ryan bounces with infectious joy in his jumper, and Josh, in his eagerness to help, wants to push him. I gently remind Josh that his spirited enthusiasm can be a bit too much for his little brother, ensuring Ryan’s safety and comfort. Meanwhile, I roast some cauliflower to tender perfection and sauté thinly shaved Brussels sprouts, adding fresh, vibrant sides to our meal. Shawn takes charge of grilling the chicken thighs, basting them generously with my special homemade BBQ sauce – a perfect complement to our fresh vegetable medley.

Dinner is served! Tonight’s delicious spread features perfectly grilled chicken thighs, beautifully glazed with our signature BBQ sauce, alongside flavorful sautéed shaved Brussels sprouts and tender roasted cauliflower. For Ryan, I prepare a special plate with small, safe bits of our dinner, supplemented with his homemade baby food – a nutritious blend of peas, chicken, and bone broth. Shawn surprises me with a cold beer for each of us, a simple gesture that makes the evening feel almost like a spontaneous date night at home! My sister, our wonderful neighbor, stops by to say a quick hello, even helping to feed Ryan for a bit. These impromptu visits are truly heartwarming and underscore the beauty of our close-knit family connections.

6:30 PM – Bedtime Bliss: Bath, Snuggles, and Sleepy Cuddles

Around 6:30 PM, the evening wind-down truly begins. I give Ryan his bath, creating a soothing transition to bedtime, while Josh plays nearby and Shawn tackles the dinner dishes. My poor little buddy is clearly exhausted from his busy day, his energy winding down. Once he’s out of the bath, gently dried off, and dressed in his cozy pajamas, I nurse him. He often drifts off to sleep peacefully in my arms, a profound and incredibly sweet moment of holding my sleeping baby. These are the moments I truly cherish, filled with immense love and gratitude for him.

A tender bedtime moment: Mom cradling baby Ryan as he peacefully falls asleep while nursing, emphasizing the deep bond and comfort found in the evening routine.

7:00 PM – Ryan’s Asleep, Josh’s Movie Time, and a Quick Work Check

By 7:00 PM, Ryan is peacefully tucked into bed, allowing for the next phase of our evening. I then join Shawn and Josh in the living room for our family movie night. Tonight, Josh has chosen ‘Frozen,’ which has become his current favorite due to his newfound fascination with snow. It’s absolutely adorable how he pronounces Sven as “Smen,” consistently giving Shawn and me a good laugh. Josh’s humor is infectious, and I just adore his joyful spirit! During a natural lull in the movie, I also sneak in a quick check of emails and Instagram, responding to some DMs and interacting with my favorite fellow blogger accounts – a vital part of maintaining my online presence and connecting with my community.

7:30 PM – Josh’s Bath Time and Focused Blog Work

We pause the movie around 7:30 PM for Josh’s bath, a ritual Shawn lovingly handles. This dedicated time provides me with a focused window to return to writing this blog post, meticulously uploading the day’s photographs and refining the narrative. It’s a crucial period for ensuring the content is engaging and complete.

8:00 PM – Cozy Wind-Down: Gentle Lights and Last Bits of Frozen

Josh emerges from his bath, fresh and clean, and rejoins us in the living room for a final bit of ‘Frozen.’ We strategically dim the lights, creating a soft, cozy, and calm atmosphere, a gentle signal to his young mind that bedtime is drawing near. This tranquil period is a perfect, peaceful end to the boys’ active day, fostering a sense of comfort and security.

8:30 PM – Goodnights, Professional Accomplishments, and Content Scheduling

At 8:30 PM, I tuck Josh into bed with a final kiss goodnight. With the boys settled, I put the finishing touches on this blog post, meticulously reviewing it for clarity and engagement, and then schedule its publication, along with shares for my email subscribers and social media channels. Simultaneously, Shawn proudly completes our latest wedding film (a huge accomplishment after many hours of dedicated work!) and uploads it to Vimeo. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our individual work tasks converging into a productive and fulfilling evening.

9:00 PM – Couples’ Relaxation and Game of Thrones Marathon

Once all work tasks are concluded and the house is quiet, Shawn and I finally get some cherished couple time. We embark on a ‘Game of Thrones’ rewatch, starting from episode one, in anticipation of the much-awaited season finale next month. We might have started a little late in our marathon, as there are definitely too many episodes to watch before the big event, haha! But we’re thoroughly enjoying reminiscing about our favorite show, rediscovering its intricate plots and beloved characters. This is also my last pumping session of the day, a vital step to maintain my milk supply. I’m profoundly grateful that my body has consistently provided enough milk for both my babies, supporting their health and growth.

10:00 PM – Self-Care Rituals: Shower, Reading, and Peaceful Sleep

Around 10:00 PM, I indulge in a refreshing shower, washing away the day’s events, and then settle into bed. I love to read before falling asleep, finding solace and escape in the pages of a good book. Currently, I am deeply immersed in ‘Magic Hour’ by Kirstin Hannah. I’m a huge fan of this author and am diligently working my way through all her captivating books, appreciating her storytelling and character development. I usually drift off to sleep around 10:30 PM, concluding another full, dynamic, and incredibly fulfilling day. Goodnight!
