As the sun bathes California in its warm embrace, signaling the official start of summer, our thoughts inevitably turn to outdoor dining and the sizzle of the grill. There’s something undeniably magical about cooking al fresco, and for us, nothing quite captures the essence of summer like a perfectly executed grilled dinner. Today, we’re thrilled to share one of our absolute favorite recipes that embodies everything we love about warm-weather cooking: Whole30 + Keto Grilled Steak Kabobs. Prepare yourself for absolute steak shish kabob skewer perfection!
These kabobs are more than just a meal; they’re an experience. Each bite delivers a burst of smoky flavor from the grill, tender steak, and subtly sweet vegetables, making it a fantastic choice for family gatherings, backyard barbecues, or a simple weeknight dinner that feels special. Whether you’re new to Whole30 or Keto, or a seasoned pro looking for fresh inspiration, this recipe is designed to impress with its simplicity and incredible taste.

Unlocking the Secret to Flawless Steak & Vegetable Kabobs
Achieving truly perfect steak and vegetable kabobs might seem tricky, but we’re here to share a game-changing secret that will elevate your grilling game. While it might look aesthetically pleasing to thread steak and vegetables onto the same skewer, we strongly advise against it. Why? Because meat and vegetables have vastly different cooking times. Pairing them on a single skewer almost guarantees that one component will be overcooked or undercooked.
The key to culinary triumph here is simple: skewer your steak on its own kabobs and each type of vegetable on separate kabobs. This ingenious method allows you to remove each skewer from the grill precisely when its contents reach optimal doneness. Imagine perfectly juicy, medium-rare steak alongside tender-crisp bell peppers and zucchini, all achieved without compromise. This ensures every element of your meal is cooked to perfection, maximizing flavor and texture.
Once everything is beautifully grilled, we love to slide all the steak and vegetables off their skewers and arrange them artfully on a large serving platter. This presentation is not only stunning but also incredibly practical, allowing everyone at the table to easily serve themselves their favorite pieces. To enhance this vibrant display, we often add a generous batch of our delicious marinated onions to the platter, creating a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
Choosing the Best Steak for Your Kabobs
When it comes to selecting the ideal cut for your steak kabobs, my hands-down favorite is top sirloin. This cut boasts excellent marbling, which is crucial for keeping the steak incredibly juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor as it grills. Top sirloin stands up wonderfully to the high heat of the grill, developing a beautiful char while remaining succulent on the inside.
For this recipe, I sourced some absolutely gorgeous 100% grass-fed top sirloin from Sprouts Farmers Market. While I frequently rave about their expansive selection of fresh, seasonal produce, I’m equally impressed by the consistently high quality of their meat department. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been particularly delighted with how well-stocked Sprouts has kept their meat, ensuring that premium cuts like grass-fed sirloin are readily available. This reliability is often attributed to Sprouts’ commitment to sourcing from smaller, dedicated suppliers and family ranchers, which helps maintain high-quality inventory even during challenging times. When you choose quality ingredients like grass-fed top sirloin, you’re not just cooking a meal; you’re crafting an experience.

Serving Your Whole30 + Keto Grilled Steak Kabobs
Instead of a traditional pre-grilling marinade, which can sometimes mute the natural flavors of high-quality steak, I prefer to enhance the cooked steak and vegetable kabobs with a simple yet incredibly flavorful post-grill drizzle. My absolute favorite for this is the oil from my homemade marinated onions. Its bright, tangy notes and aromatic essence impart an amazing freshness that perfectly complements the rich, smoky flavors of the grilled meat and vegetables. Of course, no serving is complete without an ample side of those very marinated onions!
For those who enjoy a bit of a kick, serving these kabobs with a vibrant chimichurri sauce would also be an equally delicious and refreshing option. The fresh herbs and garlicky tang of chimichurri perfectly cut through the richness of the steak, creating a beautifully balanced meal. Consider pairing your kabobs with a light and fluffy cauliflower rice for a complete Whole30 and Keto-friendly meal. The mild flavor of the cauliflower rice provides an excellent base, allowing the bold flavors of the steak, vegetables, and marinated onions to truly shine.

Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds 100% grass-fed top sirloin steak, I get mine at Sprouts!
- 2 medium zucchini, cut into ½” thick half moons
- 2 yellow bell peppers, cut into 1″ squares
- 1 pint grape tomatoes
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, cut in half
- olive oil
- salt + pepper
- 1 batch marinated onions
Instructions
-
Preheat your grill to a medium-high heat (around 375ºF). If using a pellet grill like a Traeger, set it to 375ºF. Thoroughly clean your grill grates to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
-
Gather your skewers. We highly recommend durable metal skewers for ease of use and reusability. If you opt for wooden skewers, remember to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. This crucial step prevents them from catching fire on the hot grill.
-
Carefully thread your ingredients onto separate skewers. Place all the steak pieces onto their own skewers. Likewise, dedicate individual skewers for each type of vegetable (e.g., one skewer for zucchini, one for bell peppers, etc.). This strategic separation is vital because steak and various vegetables cook at slightly different rates, allowing you to achieve perfect doneness for each component without overcooking or undercooking.
-
Generously rub all the steak and vegetable skewers with a good quality olive oil. This not only prevents sticking but also helps in achieving a beautiful char. Season both sides of your skewered ingredients liberally with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
-
Place the prepared steak and vegetable skewers on the preheated grill. Grill, turning them once halfway through the cooking process. For medium-rare steak, aim for an internal temperature of 125ºF, which typically takes about 12-15 minutes. The vegetables will generally require 15-20 minutes, or until they are tender-crisp with appealing char marks. Use a meat thermometer to ensure precise doneness for the steak.
-
Once cooked, remove the skewers from the grill. For serving, we recommend sliding all the flavorful meat and vegetables off their skewers and arranging them on a large serving platter. Drizzle generously with the delicious marinated onion oil while warm. This serving style allows everyone to easily help themselves to their desired portions. These kabobs are wonderfully complemented by a side of cauliflower rice and an abundance of those irresistible marinated onions. So good!
-
Should you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will remain fresh and delicious for at least 5 days, making them perfect for meal prep throughout the week.
Notes
Feel free to get creative with your vegetable choices! Beyond zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, and grape tomatoes, consider adding red onion wedges, cherry tomatoes, or even pineapple chunks (if not strictly Whole30/Keto) for a burst of color and flavor. Ensure all vegetables are cut into roughly uniform sizes to promote even cooking.
No outdoor grill? No problem! You can easily roast these delicious skewers in your oven. Simply arrange all the skewers on a rimmed baking sheet. Roast in a preheated oven at 425ºF (220ºC) for approximately the same duration as you would grill them, turning halfway. You might not get the same smoky char, but they will still be incredibly flavorful!
