Josh’s Unwavering Journey: Conquering Clubfeet

Our 6-year-old son, Josh, was born with clubfeet, a condition that later revealed a unique combination of other medical issues affecting his bones, muscles, and tendons. While his journey has been long and filled with challenges, we are incredibly grateful that all his conditions have proven treatable and fixable! We’re excited to share an update on his latest round of correction, a testament to his incredible spirit and our family’s unwavering optimism.

Navigating Our Son’s Clubfoot Journey: A Story of Resilience and Hope

Josh is once again embarking on a new phase of his clubfoot correction journey, now back in casts. He received his new casts just a couple of days ago, and we are absolutely amazed by how incredibly well he’s adapting! He’s already walking around with the confidence of a seasoned pro, experiencing minimal pain, which is a huge blessing. His resilience constantly inspires us, and we couldn’t be prouder of this brave little boy.

For those new to Josh’s story, or if you wish to delve deeper into his past treatments and remarkable progress, I’ve previously documented his journey. You can visit this post for comprehensive information covering all his prior corrections and milestones up until this point. It paints a picture of the extensive road we’ve traveled to reach where we are today.

We are hopeful, with fingers firmly crossed, that this particular round of correction will be his last until he reaches his late teens and his growth plates fully mature. However, Josh’s situation is exceptionally unique. He presents with a combination of leg issues that are so incredibly rare that despite consulting with leading pediatric podiatrists across the entire country, not a single specialist has encountered another child with his specific set of challenges. This rarity means we approach each new development with a “go with the flow” mentality, tackling problems as they arise and always holding onto hope for the best possible outcome. His journey reminds us daily that while the path may be uncharted, resilience and dedicated care can overcome even the most complex medical puzzles.

A Comprehensive Look at Josh’s Latest Corrective Journey

To keep our beloved family and friends informed about the intricate details of Josh’s upcoming treatment, we’ve compiled a summary of the plan. Shawn and I are completely comfortable sharing this information, as transparency helps everyone understand and support us through this significant chapter.

First and foremost, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the immense love you all pour into Josh. It means the world to us. As we step into this new phase, Shawn and I are approaching it with absolute calm and peace. We’ve navigated these waters numerous times before, and through every challenge, things have not only been “fine” but have consistently led to significant improvements for Josh. We believe in making this journey as positive and engaging as possible, transforming it into a special time where our family grows stronger and closer. There is nothing but gratitude and good vibes as we embrace this next correction!

The Overarching Goal: Laying the Foundation for a Pain-Free Future

  • The primary objective of this intricate process is to achieve the greatest possible flatness in Josh’s feet. This crucial correction aims to significantly reduce or eliminate potential foot pain he might experience as an adult, ensuring he can lead an active and comfortable life.

Understanding the Treatment Phases: From Casting to Recovery

  • Initial Casting Phase: We began the casting process in the first week of January. This innovative approach involves short leg casts, which conveniently stop below the knee, allowing Josh to walk on them. This is a first for us, and we are incredibly excited about the mobility this provides!
  • Weekly Cast Changes: Josh will receive new casts every week for an estimated duration of 4-6 weeks. The exact number of weeks will depend on how effectively his feet respond to the gradual correction facilitated by each cast. The core principle of casting is to gently and incrementally bend his foot bones, progressively moving them towards the desired flat position. Each successive cast will advance this correction a bit further.
  • The Tendon Transfer Surgery: Once his feet achieve sufficient flatness through casting, Josh will undergo a surgical procedure on both feet. This is a very common and effective surgery known as a Tendon Transfer. During this procedure, the tendon that typically extends from his midfoot to his big toe will be carefully transferred from his midfoot to his pinkie toe. This strategic repositioning serves to anchor the foot securely in the correct anatomical position. It plays a vital role in preventing the foot from relapsing into its original clubfoot position as he continues to grow. We often liken it to a permanent retainer for teeth after braces – a long-term solution to maintain correction.
  • Post-Surgery Hospital Stay: Following the tendon transfer surgery, Josh will only require an overnight stay in the hospital for one night, ensuring he is comfortable and stable before returning home.
  • Non-Weight Bearing Recovery: After the surgery, Josh will transition into full leg casts, extending from his toes all the way to the very top of his thighs. During this critical healing period of four weeks, he will be unable to place any weight on his feet. We’ll be relying on a wheelchair to get around, and we anticipate building up some serious arm muscles as we carry him!
  • Transition to Weight-Bearing Casts: Following the initial four weeks of non-weight bearing, he will move back into short leg casts for an additional two weeks, during which he will be able to gradually bear weight again.
  • Out of Casts & Physical Therapy: Our hopeful timeline sees Josh out of all casts by the end of March or early April. At this point, he will immediately begin an intensive physical therapy regimen to strengthen his feet and legs, improve flexibility, and ensure optimal long-term function.
  • Family Support & Logistics: Shawn, Josh’s father, has generously taken a significant amount of time off work and will be home for much of this period, providing invaluable support and care. Additionally, Josh will be continuing his kindergarten virtually until he is fully healed and confidently walking again, ensuring continuity in his education.
  • Expert Medical Team: We are incredibly fortunate to have found an exceptional doctor who will be performing this procedure. The tendon transfer surgery is a routine procedure for this specialist, and we are deeply grateful to have found such a skilled surgeon nearby who is also covered by our insurance, alleviating additional stress.
  • Preparing Josh Emotionally: Josh is fully aware of the upcoming casting and surgery. We’ve made a concerted effort to frame it in a positive and engaging way, reassuring him that this process will be significantly easier than his previous knee surgery. So far, Josh has handled this news wonderfully, openly asking questions to his doctors during all lead-up appointments. We are telling him that he’s on his way to getting “Super Feet” to complement his “Super Knees,” which will empower him to run faster, jump higher, and achieve even better balance. We focus on positive spins, making each step an adventure:
    • “You get to choose the color of your casts! And you get a new one each week! Which vibrant color should we pick this time?”
    • “Dad will be home from work while you’re in casts! Where are some fun new places we should all explore together?”
    • “We get to have your wheelchair again after surgery! Do you think you can still do an amazing wheelie?”
    • “Where is somewhere exciting we could all go to celebrate once you’re walking freely after your casts come off?”
