Embracing Summer’s Splendor: Sunsets, Success, and Sustainable Living in California
Summer in California unfolds with its own unique rhythm, a vibrant tapestry woven with golden sunsets, the joyful buzz of new beginnings, and the quiet satisfaction of homegrown harvests. This past week was a beautiful testament to this, filled with moments that reminded us to pause, appreciate, and celebrate the journey. From the breathtaking beauty of nature’s daily spectacle to significant milestones in our videography business and the simple delights of our backyard farm, it was a period rich with experiences and gratitude.
Capturing Golden Moments: Nature’s Artistry
There are some sights that simply demand your full attention, and a truly magnificent sunset is undoubtedly one of them. This weekend, we were treated to an extraordinary display as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with an unbelievable palette of colors. For what felt like an hour, the entire western sky was ablaze with fiery oranges, soft purples, and deep crimson hues, slowly fading into a gentle twilight. It was a spectacular and utterly captivating show that reminded us of the simple yet profound beauty nature offers every single day.
Observing such a prolonged and vivid sunset allows for a moment of profound peace and reflection. The transition of light, the changing intensity of the colors, and the subtle shifts in the clouds create a dynamic and ever-evolving masterpiece. These are the moments that ground us, offering a sense of calm amidst the hustle of daily life and providing endless inspiration for our creative endeavors.

A Dream Realized: Our Journey in Wedding Videography
This past Saturday marked a significant milestone for our videography business, Acorn Films, as we had the immense privilege of capturing our largest wedding to date. The setting was absolutely enchanting: a stunning vineyard nestled in the picturesque Livermore Valley, specifically at the groom’s parents’ beautiful estate. Livermore is renowned for its charming wineries and idyllic landscapes, making it a truly sought-after destination for couples dreaming of a romantic vineyard wedding.
Filming in such a gorgeous location, especially one imbued with personal family history, adds an extra layer of emotion and significance to our work. The natural beauty of the vineyard, with its rolling hills and rows of grapevines, provided an exquisite backdrop for every moment. From the intimate exchange of vows under the California sun to the joyous celebration that followed, every detail was breathtaking. It truly felt like the prettiest wedding we’ve ever had the honor of documenting. This particular photograph captures my perspective during the ceremony, offering a glimpse into the serene yet focused world of a wedding videographer, ensuring every precious tear and smile is preserved forever.

After a demanding yet incredibly rewarding day of filming, a profound sense of gratitude washed over me. It’s hard to believe how far our little videography business has come since its humble beginnings. The idea for Acorn Films was first sketched out on the back of a restaurant menu in the summer of 2013, a whimsical dream fueled by passion and a shared vision between Shawn and me. Now, just two years later, that dream has blossomed into something far more successful and fulfilling than we could have ever imagined.
Our journey as entrepreneurs has been an incredible learning experience, filled with challenges, triumphs, and countless moments of creative collaboration. The synergy Shawn and I share is truly remarkable; we complement each other’s strengths and work together seamlessly, both behind the camera and in the intricate editing process. This partnership is undoubtedly the cornerstone of our success, allowing us to consistently deliver high-quality, emotive wedding films that beautifully tell each couple’s unique love story. We pour our hearts into every project, understanding that we are not just filming events, but capturing indelible memories that families will cherish for generations.
Beat the Heat: Chicken Care in a California Summer
This week, California truly lived up to its reputation for intense summer heat, with temperatures soaring well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. We felt incredibly fortunate to have had our air conditioning installed just in time, providing a much-needed sanctuary from the scorching sun. However, our beloved backyard chickens were not so lucky. The heat outside was genuinely concerning, and their well-being became our top priority.
Caring for poultry during extreme heat requires vigilance and proactive measures. We constantly refilled their waterers, ensuring the water was always ice-cold and fresh, which is crucial for their hydration. To offer them an extra layer of cooling and a hydrating treat, they received generous slices of watermelon twice a day. It was a joy to watch them devour the juicy fruit; they absolutely adore watermelon, pecking at it enthusiastically. This not only helped them stay cool but also supplemented their fluid intake, essential for preventing heat stress.

Beyond constant water and refreshing treats, we also ensured they had ample shade throughout the day. Chickens are resilient creatures, but prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can be dangerous. Our efforts extended to a somewhat comical experiment: Shawn and I bought a cheap kiddie pool from Target, hoping our flock might enjoy a cooling dip. We envisioned them leisurely wading in the shallow water, finding relief from the oppressive heat.
Our test subject was Laney, one of our more adventurous hens. We gently placed her in the cool water, and for about ten seconds, she stood perfectly still, seemingly contemplating her newfound aquatic experience. Then, with a sudden flurry of feathers, she launched herself out and scurried away, clearly unimpressed. Despite our best intentions, none of the other chickens have shown any interest in the pool since. It seems that while humans might enjoy a cool swim, our feathered friends prefer to keep their feet firmly on dry land. It was a humorous reminder that even with the best care, animals often have their own unique preferences!
Garden Delights: The Triumph of Our First Zucchini Harvest

One of the most exciting moments this week came from our garden: we picked our very first zucchini! For a long time, our gardening efforts were primarily focused on tomatoes, which we’ve grown with moderate success. This year, we decided to diversify, planting three robust zucchini plants and two vibrant yellow squash plants in our raised garden beds. The anticipation leading up to this harvest has been immense, and seeing the plants flourish has been incredibly rewarding.
Each plant is absolutely teeming with life, boasting at least twenty little developing zucchinis and squashes. I’ve been diligently checking them every single day, watching their growth with eager eyes, determined to pick them at their optimal size before they become too large and lose some of their tenderness. This week, three of our zucchini finally reached that perfect point—firm, glossy, and just the right length. The thrill of harvesting these was palpable; there’s a unique satisfaction that comes from growing your own food, especially when it’s a new crop.
This “first” feels like a significant accomplishment in our journey toward a more self-sufficient lifestyle. It’s a tangible result of patience, care, and a little bit of green thumb magic. The excitement of bringing these fresh, homegrown vegetables into our kitchen is truly unparalleled.

Our dedicated squash raised bed, visible on the left side of this image, is a testament to the vigorous growth of these plants. Given the sheer number of developing fruits, we are fairly certain that we are going to have an abundance of squash—perhaps even more than we know what to do with! This is, of course, the best kind of problem to have for any home gardener.
An overflowing harvest presents wonderful opportunities: from experimenting with new recipes like zucchini bread, grilled squash, and hearty stir-fries, to sharing the bounty with friends, family, and neighbors. It’s a joyous reflection of nature’s generosity and the simple pleasures of cultivating our own food. Each day in the garden brings new discoveries and reminds us of the profound connection we have with the earth, making every sun-drenched summer day in California a truly golden experience.
