Spring 2018 A Daily Perspective

Welcome to a candid glimpse into a pivotal day in my life – Thursday, May 31, 2018. This particular day encapsulates the beautiful chaos of my world: my lively son, Josh, had just celebrated his 2.5-year milestone, and I was on the cusp of entering my 36th week of pregnancy. It’s a day richly woven with the everyday adventures of mom life, the demands of a working professional, and heartfelt moments captured straight from my iPhone. More than anything, this entry is a testament to how deeply I cherish this bustling, joy-filled existence. Come along as I share the raw, unedited, and incredibly fulfilling journey of balancing family, career, and the exciting anticipation of a new arrival.

Mom life and work life blend as a pregnant woman shares her daily routine with her two-and-a-half-year-old son, Josh.

Morning Routine: Waking Up to the Rhythm of Family Life

7:00 AM – A Quiet Awakening and Digital Connections

My day typically begins with a gentle internal alarm clock around 7:00 AM. Josh, my energetic two-and-a-half-year-old, is still nestled in dreamland, a peaceful contrast to the flurry of activity that will soon follow. My husband, Shawn, has already slipped out for work, his departure so quiet I don’t even register it. It’s a recurring marvel how I can sleep soundly through his alarm, shower, and dressing routine, yet the slightest peep from Josh instantly jolts me awake. Such is the unique sensory system of a mother! This morning, I feel well-rested, having only made about three trips to the bathroom during the night – a solid win at 36 weeks pregnant. Baby boy, meanwhile, is already putting on a lively show, his kicks a comforting reminder of the precious life growing within. He usually joins the waking world about five minutes after I do, which gives me a serene window to check emails, scroll through Instagram, and connect with loved ones. My best friend and I are exchanging excited texts this morning; she’s scheduled for a C-section tomorrow, and with our due dates just three weeks apart, both expecting boys, the anticipation is palpable. My heart swells with joy and excitement for her impending arrival. Around 7:20 AM, Josh begins to stir, his soft murmurs and giggles slowly filling the quiet space. I’ve learned that allowing him about ten minutes to fully wake up in his bed prevents any morning crankiness – a trait he undoubtedly inherited from me!

7:30 AM – Breakfast Prep, Cuddles, and Connecting

As Josh’s cheerful chatter grows, I head to the kitchen to start breakfast, the aroma of sizzling bacon soon filling the house. Stepping into Josh’s room, I find him in a wonderfully bright mood, his first words a request to see the “dig digs.” Our driveway has been undergoing repaving for the past three weeks, transforming our front yard into an exciting construction zone, much to Josh’s delight. Tractors, excavators, and dump trucks have become his daily fascination, a source of endless wonder. We spend precious moments gazing out the window at the machinery, sharing warm cuddles on the couch, and FaceTiming Shawn to send him good morning wishes. These early morning hours, filled with playful interactions and tender snuggles, are truly among my favorite. Josh is an absolute joy – sweet, happy, and brimming with playful energy. We also make time to FaceTime my friend Courtney, a fellow mom of two little boys, where we catch up and eagerly plan a playdate at her house for the following day. These connections, both with family and friends, are the anchors of my busy week.

8:30 AM – A Nutritious and Engaging Breakfast

Breakfast is a hearty affair designed to fuel our busy morning. Josh’s plate is loaded with crispy bacon, fluffy scrambled eggs, creamy avocado slices, and a glass of refreshing orange juice. My meal consists of wholesome avocado toast topped with scrambled eggs. Josh, ever the bacon enthusiast, devours his first before casting covetous glances at my toast. Of course, I’m always happy to share a bite or two with my little guy. To make mealtime a little smoother and encourage him to eat more, we often have a gentle cartoon playing in the background. Today, it’s the comforting world of Daniel Tiger, a familiar and beloved friend. This strategy works wonders for us, transforming potential mealtime battles into peaceful, enjoyable moments.

9:00 AM – Kitchen Tidying and Potty Training Triumphs

Once breakfast concludes, Josh is off to play with his toys, giving me a window to tackle the kitchen cleanup. This involves clearing the table, loading and emptying the dishwasher, and giving the counters a quick wipe-down. Today’s play session was particularly memorable because Josh decided pants were optional. After successfully doing a “big potty” (a number two) all by himself, he simply didn’t bother to put his pants back on! It’s a comical sight, but also a source of immense pride. He’s been fully potty trained for two months now, and the transition has been incredibly smooth. Celebrating these small victories is a constant reminder of how quickly he’s growing and learning.

9:30 AM – Streamlined Shower Time and Independent Play

Next up is shower time, a routine that became a game-changer during the colder months. I discovered that bringing Josh into the shower with me created a win-win situation. He has an absolute blast splashing around in the bottom of the tub, getting thoroughly cleaned from breakfast’s inevitable messes, while I get a much-needed shower without having to worry about him getting into mischief. It’s a brilliant hack that allows me to maintain my hygiene while ensuring his safety and enjoyment. After my shower, I quickly get dressed and apply my makeup, a brief 10-minute ritual while Josh continues to play happily in the bath. My bedroom offers a direct view into the bathroom, allowing me to keep a watchful eye on him the entire time. I genuinely appreciate his growing ability to entertain himself, a skill that’s becoming increasingly valuable as my pregnancy progresses.

10:00 AM – Errands, Neighbors, and a Dino Rescue Mission

By 10:00 AM, I’m dressed and ready to tackle the day. I then retrieve Josh from the bath, helping him get dressed and ready. A quick tidying of the living room, stowing away all the toys back into their drawer, helps to restore a sense of order before we head out. Our first mini-adventure takes us down the driveway to my sister’s house, who fortunately is also my neighbor – a setup I absolutely adore! Josh had left a beloved toy there yesterday, a red dinosaur, and his persistent requests for it couldn’t be ignored. Though my sister isn’t home, I have the key to her garage code, a testament to our close-knit family dynamic. We retrieve the dinosaur, satisfying Josh’s longing, and then it’s straight into the car for our next destination: the park.

10:30 AM – Serendipitous Family Encounter and Ongoing Home Projects

Our journey to the park includes a quick stop for gas. As I’m filling the tank, I suddenly hear familiar voices – my mom and sisters! What are the odds? They’re at the same gas station, filling up my dad’s truck. They’ve just picked up the last of the retaining wall stones for my sister’s new landscaping project – yet another family-involved home improvement endeavor. Josh is absolutely thrilled to see his grandparents and aunts, his face lighting up with pure joy. These unexpected moments of family connection, even during mundane errands, are truly heartwarming and highlight the wonderful closeness we share.

Mid-Day Adventures: Park Play, Property Management, and Prepared Meals

10:45 AM – Park Playdate and Cherished Connections

The park is a vibrant hub of activity, and today is extra special as we meet up with my cousin Ashley and her adorable three-month-old daughter, Eloise. Josh, ever the social butterfly, immediately gravitates towards the sandbox, making new friends with the other children there. It’s incredibly heartwarming to watch him engage, especially when an older child kindly invites him to play catch, demonstrating sweet, budding friendships. Eloise, a peaceful little angel, naps soundly in her stroller while Ashley and I catch up on everything from motherhood to life’s latest happenings. These playdates are more than just an outing for the kids; they’re vital opportunities for us moms to connect, share, and recharge. It’s truly so much fun to share these moments with family and friends.

12:00 PM – Rental Property Troubles and Family Support

As noon approaches, we begin our journey back home, preparing for lunch. On the way, I call Shawn, who updates me on some unexpected issues at our rental property. Last night, around 8:30 PM, the tenants reported dimming lights and a burning smell – a rather alarming call. Shawn and my dad rushed over, but couldn’t pinpoint the problem. This morning, my dad returned with an electrician friend, and thankfully, the diagnosis was a relatively simple fix: some breakers had overheated and burned out. The relief is immense; it could have been far more complicated or dangerous. Managing rental properties always comes with its share of surprises, and it’s invaluable to have such reliable family support in these situations.

12:15 PM – Home Arrival and Community Project Progress

Arriving home, we find a wonderful scene: my dad and mom are helping my sister put the finishing touches on her retaining wall. The project is nearly complete and looks fantastic, a testament to their collective effort and skill. Josh is overjoyed to see everyone, running up to greet his grandparents and aunts. My dad gives me a more detailed account of the rental house repairs, recounting the electrician’s assessment. His willingness to drop everything and help us manage these unforeseen challenges truly makes him the best. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength and generosity within our family.

12:30 PM – Chick Care, Lunch Prep, and Efficiency Hacks

After a quick check-in with our baby chicks, who arrived in early April, I refill their food and water. They’re growing so quickly, and I call Shawn to ask him to pick up more chick food on his way home, musing aloud about whether they’re almost ready for the big coop. The thought immediately brings up a new question: how do we properly introduce new chicks to our established flock of older chickens? That’s definitely a research project for later! Heading inside, I prepare Josh’s lunch: his favorite turkey slices, juicy grapes, a few crunchy chips, and a glass of apple juice. He requests Daniel Tiger again, and as he eats, I get to work preparing my lunch, and Shawn’s lunch for tomorrow. I recently discovered an ingenious hack: making Shawn’s future lunch while I’m already making mine. Since all the ingredients are already out, it’s incredibly fast and saves me from having to cook at the end of the day when all I want to do is relax. This small change has been a real game-changer, proving that sometimes, the simplest adjustments can make the biggest difference in managing a busy schedule.

1:00 PM – Nap Time, Productivity Sprint, and Work-Life Balance

Josh finishes his lunch completely, a sight that always fills me with immense satisfaction. I gently ask him if he’s ready for “night night time,” and his sweet, sleepy “yea, nigh nigh time mommy, Joshie tired” melts my heart. He truly is an excellent sleeper and loves his naps. I tuck him into his crib, dim the lights, and exchange our customary “night night, I love yous.” His innocent “nigh nigh mommy, wuv you” brings tears to my eyes; I am utterly obsessed with this precious boy. With Josh settled, I finally sit down to eat my own lunch, enjoying an episode of Vanderpump Rules, my current guilty pleasure. Then, it’s “get-all-the-things-done” time! I tackle the monumental pile of laundry from the previous day – four loads just for our clothes and towels, not even including Josh’s items! After putting it all away, I do a quick tidy of the house and dive into my emails, aiming for the coveted “inbox zero.” Shawn had finished a wedding film last night, so my tasks include uploading it to Vimeo, posting it on our Acorn Films blog, emailing it to the happy couple and their wedding planner, and scheduling social media shares for Facebook and Instagram for Friday. I also reply to reader comments on this blog and begin drafting this very “Day In The Life” post, juggling creative work with administrative tasks, a constant dance of priorities for a working mom.

Afternoon into Evening: Unforeseen Challenges, Outdoor Play, and Family Time

3:15 PM – Rental Property Revisited and Unexpected Delays

Just as I’m hitting my stride with work, Shawn arrives home from work! His flexible schedule is truly a blessing, allowing us more family time. I hear him chatting with my sister in the driveway, but then my phone buzzes – a text from him. The tenants have called *again*, reporting persistent issues with the lights. He’s already on his way back to the rental property to investigate further. It’s unusual for us to hear from tenants more than three or four times a year, so today feels like an anomaly. Despite the interruption, I continue working on my laptop, adapting to the unpredictable nature of owning a rental property.

4:30 PM – A Long Nap’s End, Outdoor Adventures, and Sisterly Bonds

Wow, what a nap! Josh is *just* beginning to stir around 4:30 PM, perfect timing as I was about to wake him anyway. He truly is a champion napper, but I try to have him up by this time to ensure it doesn’t interfere with his bedtime routine. He wakes up in a wonderfully cheerful mood, enjoys a sippy cup of milk, and immediately expresses a desire to play outside. We quickly get his shoes on and head out, eventually wandering down to my sister’s house. For Josh, nothing quite compares to playing at his aunt’s house with her dogs. She’s not home yet, so we let ourselves in again, a testament to our family’s open-door policy! We then explore the dirt hill, where Josh gleefully throws rocks and climbs, getting as dirty as his heart desires – after all, that’s what being a kid is all about! We laugh and clap, reveling in the simple joys of outdoor play. I take a moment to call my mom for a chat, and soon after, my sister arrives home from the grocery store, allowing us to catch up further. These casual, unscripted moments with family are truly the fabric of our daily lives.

5:30 PM – Shawn’s Return, Rental Property Resolution, and Pregnancy Fatigue

Shawn finally returns home around 5:30 PM, bringing news about the rental property. It turns out they need a new surge box (or something similar; the technical details sometimes escape me). In a frustrating turn of events, the power issues somehow burned out the dishwasher circuit board while they were working on it. This means we’ll be buying the tenants a new dishwasher tomorrow. “Dang it!” I think, with a touch of playful exasperation, “I want a new dishwasher!” A humorous thought crosses my mind: perhaps Shawn would let me keep the brand new one for us and give the tenants our older model? Josh, oblivious to the day’s property woes, is absolutely thrilled to see Shawn, running up to him for a joyous reunion. They immediately dive into playtime, while I, feeling very much nine months pregnant, am pretty worn out and ready for some rest.

6:00 PM – A Dream Husband Cooks Dinner and Precious Snuggles

At 6:00 PM, Shawn proves himself to be a true dream husband by offering to cook dinner! Tonight’s menu features my delicious Paleo + Whole30 Italian Meatballs served with fresh zoodles. It’s incredibly sweet to watch him follow the recipe directly from my website on his phone. His thoughtfulness and willingness to help are beyond words; I love and appreciate him immensely. While Shawn expertly prepares our meal, Josh and I snuggle on the couch, enjoying another episode of Daniel Tiger. These moments of quiet connection, especially when I can simply sit and relax, are truly cherished as my pregnancy progresses.

6:30 PM – Family Gathering and Scooter Triumphs

With the meatballs happily sizzling in the oven, I notice a familiar scene unfolding in our front yard: my parents, sister, and brother-in-law are gathered, measuring out the driveway. They’re estimating the cost of blacktop, yet another collaborative family project. I feel incredibly fortunate to see so much of my family on any given day; my parents live just five minutes away, and my sister is literally my next-door neighbor. This close proximity fosters a wonderful sense of community and support. We head outside to say hello, and Josh, beaming with pride, zips around on his scooter. He’s just mastered riding it, and his joyful exuberance is infectious. We all clap and cheer for him, celebrating his new skill. My heart swells with love for him in these precious, simple moments.

7:15 PM – Dinner Delights and Shawn’s angelic Clean-Up

Dinner time arrives, and the meatballs are absolutely perfect – Shawn did such an amazing job! Josh, with his usual hearty appetite, devours his entire dinner and even asks for “more meatballs, dad!” happily consuming two additional servings beyond his initial plate. As if cooking wasn’t enough, Shawn then transforms into an actual angel from heaven, taking charge of the entire dinner cleanup and tidying the kitchen. He truly is too good to me, consistently going above and beyond to support and care for our family.

Evening Wind-Down: Bedtime Rituals, Late-Night Work, and Cherished Downtime

8:00 PM – Bathtime Rituals and Bedtime Stories

Eight o’clock signals bathtime, a special ritual that Shawn always handles with Josh. It’s “their thing,” a precious bonding time that I deeply appreciate. While they splash and play, I take the opportunity to tidy the house, lay out Josh’s pajamas, and prepare for bedtime. After his bath, we gather in our big bed for some playful wrestling and tickles, filling the room with laughter. Then, it’s story time, followed by a quick trip outside for Josh to say goodnight to his beloved chickens. Finally, we tuck him into his room by 8:30 PM, showering him with hugs and kisses. He usually drifts off to sleep on his own within 15-30 minutes, a testament to what a truly good boy he is.

8:30 PM – Evening Work Session and Anticipation of a New Arrival

With Josh peacefully asleep, I grab my computer to squeeze in a bit more work. I respond to a few more emails from readers, catch up on texts with two friends, and then dedicate myself to finishing this blog post. Shawn, meanwhile, is immersed in editing a wedding video. We have two more in the queue – both from weddings we filmed this month – and he’s diligently working to complete them before the baby arrives. Fingers crossed he makes it! His dedication and hard work for our family are truly inspiring.

9:30 PM – Winding Down and Self-Care Rituals

By 9:30 PM, this post is finally done and scheduled to go live tomorrow. I’m ready to cozy up in bed! I give Shawn a huge, heartfelt goodnight kiss, complete my face-washing routine, and then snuggle under the covers with my Kindle. I love reading, and currently, I’m engrossed in The 5th Wave. (A quick check for the link on Amazon revealed it’s also a movie – I’ll definitely have to watch it once I’ve finished the book!) I’m halfway through and completely captivated by the story. To enhance the relaxation, I diffuse some lavender essential oils, creating a calming ambiance perfect for unwinding after a long, full day.

10:30 PM – Shared Moments and Weekend Anticipation

Around 10:30 PM, Shawn joins me in bed, and soon after, we both drift off to sleep, tired but content. Tomorrow is Friday, and I can hardly wait for the weekend! Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights are our sacred “no-work” zones after Josh is asleep. These evenings are dedicated to us as a couple – we’ll watch a movie, play a game, or simply enjoy each other’s company, essentially creating at-home “dates.” These moments of shared relaxation and connection are my absolute favorite, a perfect way to recharge and strengthen our bond amidst the wonderful whirlwind of family life. Each day is a beautiful adventure, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Welcome to a candid glimpse into a pivotal day in my life – Thursday, May 31, 2018.
