Digging the Patio - A Summer DIY Project Begins

Transforming Our Backyard: From Dirt to Dream Patio (And All the Shenanigans in Between)

There’s nothing quite like the promise of a free weekend, especially after a stretch of busy schedules filled with commitments. This summer, we finally had our first truly open weekend – no weddings, no prior engagements, just pure, unadulterated free time. So, what did we decide to do with this newfound liberty? Naturally, we embarked on a rather ambitious project: digging up our backyard to lay the foundation for a beautiful new brick patio. Little did we know, this seemingly straightforward task would involve a fair share of sweat, strategy, and a surprising amount of humor. The mercury soared above 100 degrees all weekend, adding an extra layer of challenge to our endeavor. As anyone who has ever tackled a brick patio project knows, proper preparation is key, and that means digging at least eight inches deep across the entire area. This wasn’t just a casual shovel-and-go job; it was a serious excavation.

The vision for our backyard transformation had been brewing for quite some time. We envisioned an inviting outdoor living space, perfect for entertaining, relaxing with a book, or simply enjoying the sunset. A brick patio, with its classic appeal and durable nature, felt like the perfect choice to complement our home and garden. However, turning that vision into reality meant confronting the sheer physical demands of the task. As the sun beat down relentlessly, each shovel full of earth felt heavier than the last. There were moments, many of them, when I’d playfully beg Shawn to “fire” me so I could retreat indoors to the comfort of air conditioning and a good TV show. But despite the heat and the aching muscles, we persevered. We learned that the secret to staying motivated through such strenuous work is a combination of shared determination, a clear goal, and perhaps a touch of competitive spirit. After what felt like an endless procession of wheelbarrow trips – we estimated around 150 loads of dirt and debris – we finally managed to clear and level the entire area. The satisfaction of seeing the ground perfectly prepared, ready for the next phase, was immense. Digging dirt is indeed incredibly hard work, but the thought of those beautiful bricks soon gracing our new patio kept our spirits high. We’re eagerly anticipating laying the brick this upcoming weekend, excited to see the next stage of our outdoor oasis take shape.

Dogs Watching - Max and Lou's Backyard Surveillance

Our Furry Supervisors: Keeping a Close Eye on the Backyard Project

While Shawn and I were busy battling the sun and the stubborn earth, our beloved dogs, Max and Lou, were on high alert from the safety and comfort of indoors. We made the conscious decision to keep them inside during the entire digging process. Their natural curiosity meant they constantly wanted to be right in the thick of the action, sniffing at every freshly turned clod of earth and getting dangerously close to our swinging shovels. Ensuring their safety was paramount, as the last thing we wanted was to accidentally hit one of them with a tool or have them fall into a freshly dug trench. So, for their own good, they were confined to the house, though they certainly didn’t see it that way.

From their vantage point indoors, Max and Lou kept an incredibly close eye on our every move. Their faces were pressed against the glass, following us back and forth with an intensity usually reserved for squirrels in the yard. Their expressions seemed to convey a mix of confusion, longing, and perhaps a touch of betrayal. It was clear they couldn’t quite fathom why they weren’t allowed to participate in the “fun” outside. We joked that they were serving a sentence in “dog prison,” complete with strict visual monitoring of the “inmates” (us). Their constant surveillance, while amusing, also served as a gentle reminder of the true meaning of companionship. Even from a distance, their presence brought a lightheartedness to the arduous task. They’re not just pets; they’re integral members of our family, and their well-being is always a top priority, even when it means temporarily separating them from the exciting (and slightly dangerous) world of backyard DIY projects. Their watchful eyes, however, made it clear that they truly can’t stand the thought of being alone, especially when there’s so much going on.

Boys Hanging Lights - Creative Outdoor Lighting Solutions

Illuminating Our Outdoor Oasis: Ingenuity and Ambiance

A new brick patio wouldn’t be complete without the perfect ambiance, and for us, that meant embracing the magic of outdoor lighting. Once the groundwork for our patio was underway, our thoughts immediately turned to how we would illuminate this new extension of our living space. We wanted something that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, casting a warm, inviting glow perfect for evening gatherings or quiet nights under the stars. Globe outdoor string lights quickly became our top choice, known for their charming, festive look and ability to transform any space into a cozy haven.

The challenge, however, lay in the installation. Our vision involved stringing the lights from a sturdy tree in the backyard to the house, creating a beautiful canopy over the patio area. This required some serious height, and unfortunately, we didn’t have a ladder tall enough for the job. But as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and when it comes to resourceful solutions, Shawn and his brother Byron are second to none. Without hesitation, these two fellas put on a display of impressive agility, scaling the trees like a pair of experienced arborists. It was quite a sight to behold, watching them navigate the branches with such ease and confidence. Their teamwork was impeccable, with one guiding the string of lights while the other secured it, ensuring every bulb hung just right. The result? A breathtaking display of soft, glowing lights that instantly elevated the entire atmosphere of our backyard. We are absolutely thrilled with our new outdoor lights; they not only provide essential illumination but also add a touch of whimsical elegance, making our future patio truly feel like an extension of our home, ready for countless memorable moments. This creative installation perfectly showcases how a little ingenuity can overcome common DIY hurdles and lead to truly spectacular results.

Navigating the Digital Divide: Our Satellite Internet Adventures and Smart Solutions

The digital age has made internet access a cornerstone of modern life, and like many, we rely on it for everything from work to entertainment. Earlier this week, I excitedly shared my belief that our satellite internet plan offered unlimited email and website browsing, a detail that I thought was a fantastic perk. However, it turns out I was a bit too optimistic, and my memory played a trick on me. After reading that very post, Shawn gently informed me that, in fact, we do NOT have unlimited browsing. I had mistakenly confused our current plan with another internet provider we had considered, one that came with a price tag more than twice as high. The reality is that our 10 gigabytes of data is for everything – every email, every website visit, every streaming session. It was a classic case of missing the fine print, or perhaps, just wishful thinking.

Living in an area where high-speed fiber optic internet isn’t readily available often means navigating the limitations of satellite or other rural internet solutions. These plans, while providing essential connectivity, frequently come with data caps that require careful management. Understanding this new reality meant we had to quickly adapt our digital habits to avoid exceeding our monthly allowance. Thankfully, we have a fantastic workaround for our entertainment needs. We are “grandfathered in” to an unlimited data plan on our AT&T iPhones, a relic from a time when such generous mobile data plans were more common. This fortunate circumstance has become our primary strategy for data conservation. Whenever we want to watch Netflix or rent a movie off iTunes, we simply plug our iPhones into our TV. It might seem like an obnoxious extra step, requiring a bit of setup each time we want to stream content, but the savings in data usage are immense. This clever workaround allows us to enjoy our favorite shows and movies without constantly worrying about hitting our 10GB home internet cap, saving us “buttloads” in data usage and preventing costly overage charges. It’s a prime example of how resourcefulness and a bit of planning can help overcome the challenges of rural internet limitations, ensuring we stay connected and entertained without breaking the bank.

Behind the Scenes: The Unfiltered Reality of Recipe Video Production

Okay, friends. You’ve seen the recipe videos I’ve been posting – the final products, I hope, look organized, professional, and utterly delicious. The lighting is just right, the shots are perfectly framed, and the food always appears appetizing. But if you could only be a fly on the wall, or rather, if you could hear the candid, often hilarious dialogue that unfolds in the background while Shawn is filming, you would likely die of laughter. The polished presentation you see on screen often belies the chaotic, human, and sometimes utterly exasperating reality of content creation behind the camera. Usually, by the time we get around to filming these videos, we’re both utterly exhausted from long days of work and absolutely ravenous for dinner. This combination, as you might imagine, tends to shorten our patience levels considerably, leading to some rather “snappy” exchanges. Of course, it’s all said with love… mostly. It’s a unique dynamic, a blend of creative collaboration and the inherent frustrations of working together under pressure, especially when hunger is involved.

Remember that coconut lime rice video I posted on Tuesday? That particular filming session was a prime example of our “super crunchy moods.” Shawn, with his uncanny ability to capture authentic moments, managed to film a true gem of a conversation, perfectly showcasing our raw, unfiltered banter. Watching it back, it’s clear that in those moments, I secretly wanted to rip Shawn’s head off, but was simultaneously trying my absolute best to appear pleasant and composed for the camera. Can you tell? The struggle for composure while battling inner frustration is real. Shawn was absolutely cracking up about putting my signature “ending” onto the end of this particular video, knowing full well the chaotic energy that preceded it. It’s these kinds of unscripted moments that truly reveal the human side of content creation, making the final polished product even more appreciated.

Beyond the verbal sparring, there were also technical challenges that added to the hilarity. If you didn’t notice the first time you watched, the very first shot of the rice being poured (which, for the record, we ended up using anyway – whatever, it’s authentic!) was completely out of focus. The hardest part of food videography, or any videography for that matter, is consistently keeping everything in tack-sharp focus, especially when dealing with movement. In a desperate attempt to salvage the shot and avoid re-cooking, I tried scooping the poured rice back up out of the coconut oil to do one more take. The result? As I so eloquently put it in my frustration, it looked “like s***.” It was an unmitigated disaster, a sticky, clumpy mess that only added to the humor of the situation.

When Shawn was editing the video on Monday night, he was laughing so hard he was literally crying. Curious, I asked him what on earth was so funny. He then played me these unedited clips – the snappy dialogue, my frustrated attempts at composure, and the infamous “s***-looking” rice scoop. Listening to it and reliving the moments, my sides hurt from laughing so hard. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of creative endeavors, the imperfections and the genuine, unscripted moments often become the most memorable and beloved parts of the process. We hope you enjoy the laugh as much as we did, and perhaps find a bit of relatability in the very real, very human side of making seemingly perfect recipe videos.
