When preparing for motherhood, the sheer volume of baby products available can feel utterly overwhelming. From countless brands to an endless array of gadgets, distinguishing between what’s truly essential and what’s merely marketed as such becomes a monumental task. My own baby registry journey was no exception; I found myself drowning in choices, constantly wondering: “What’s the absolute best?” and “What do I actually need?”
My husband, Shawn, and I share a modest, one-bedroom home, barely scratching 700 square feet. We’re inherently minimalist; nothing brings me more joy than decluttering and getting rid of unnecessary items. With a baby on the way, our resolve was firm: we wanted to keep our baby gear to the absolute bare essentials. Our goal was to avoid our cozy space being completely overrun and filled to the brim with baby “stuff.”
Now, three months into this incredible journey with our little one, I’m genuinely surprised by how little we truly needed to navigate newborn life comfortably. It’s certainly not what major retailers like Buy Buy Baby or Babies R Us might lead you to believe, and I’m quite happy about that! This experience has truly highlighted the difference between what’s heavily advertised and what genuinely makes a parent’s life easier and more peaceful, especially for those embracing a minimalist approach.
Through trial and error, a few key items emerged as our non-negotiables. These are the 22 baby favorites that have become indispensable to our daily routine, helping us manage everything from sleep anxieties to feeding challenges, all while maintaining our small, clutter-free home. They are the true gems that allowed us to focus on bonding and enjoying our new baby, Josh, without feeling buried under a mountain of gear.

- Snuza Movement Monitor – This device is an absolute game-changer for any new mom. The Snuza clips securely onto your baby’s diaper and diligently monitors their abdominal movement. If it detects no breath for 15 seconds, it emits a gentle vibration to stimulate the baby. Should breathing not resume within 5 seconds after the vibration, it escalates to a loud, smoke detector-like alarm. After coming home from the hospital, where the risk of SIDS was heavily emphasized, my “crazy mommy brain” was plagued with anxiety that Josh might stop breathing. The Snuza provided an incredible sense of security and peace of mind. I had Josh wear it 24/7 for the first few weeks, and while I’ve since relaxed, it’s still a nightly essential. It has gone off a few times, always when Josh shifted and the monitor lost contact with his tummy, but those jarring alarms confirmed its functionality and my trust in it. Knowing it’s there allows me to rest more soundly.
- 4Moms MamaRoo – Josh adores his MamaRoo, and so do I! Its unique movements are designed to mimic the natural swaying and bouncing motions I make while holding him. This has been a lifesaver for those moments when Josh is awake and needs gentle entertainment, but my hands are occupied – whether I’m cooking, eating a warm meal alongside Shawn (a rare treat!), showering, or even just needing a quick bathroom break. It offers a safe, soothing spot that keeps him content and engaged. We also have the newborn insert, which was incredibly helpful as Josh was a tiny 5-pound baby when we brought him home. The insert ensured he fit snugly and securely, making it comfortable even for the smallest newborns.
- Leachco Podster – This baby pillow has become a central part of Josh’s day. I keep it conveniently on our living room couch, serving as a perfect and safe spot for him whether he’s awake or peacefully sleeping. Josh is a very mellow baby, so if he’s awake and simply content, a gentle placement in this podster pillow keeps him happy. If he needs more stimulation, then it’s off to the MamaRoo! What truly elevates the Podster is its portability, making it effortless to take with us when visiting family, like my parents’ house. Its angled design proved to be an absolute lifesaver during Josh’s severe acid reflux days, allowing him to sleep with his head comfortably elevated. I even placed this pillow inside his bassinet crib at night, which saved me from having to sleep with him on my chest to keep his head raised. Thankfully, his reflux is much better now, and he can sleep flat without issues, but for those early weeks, it was indispensable.
- Dr Brown Natural Flow Bottle – From day one, these were the first bottles I introduced to Josh, and he took to them without any hesitation. I never had to experiment with other brands, which was a huge relief. Crucially, he doesn’t experience any more burps with these bottles than he does during direct nursing, making them a winner in my book for minimizing discomfort. I regularly pump and keep a bottle ready in the fridge, enabling Shawn to participate in feedings and enjoy precious bonding time with Josh. Additionally, I find public nursing challenging and often uncomfortable, so when we’re out, bringing a pumped bottle offers a convenient and discreet alternative. We have just three of these 4-oz bottles, which is the perfect amount for our current needs, as Josh typically drinks up to 4 ounces per feeding.
- Aden + Anais Bamboo Burpy Bib – Josh, especially in his early weeks, was prone to significant spit-up – a whole lot of it! While acid reflux medication has improved things, those first few weeks saw him spitting up multiple times per feeding. These burpy bibs are simply the best solution we found. Their generous width and length ensure that spit-up rarely reaches me, keeping my clothes clean and dry. More importantly, they are incredibly absorbent, soaking up all the moisture and protecting my shoulder. I also appreciate the thoughtful design that includes a button, allowing them to convert into full-coverage bibs once he starts solid foods – a fantastic two-for-one item! We currently own six of these, which is a good number for frequent spit-ups, though parents with less spitty babies might find four sufficient.
- Soothie Pacifier – All hail the Soothie! I genuinely love this pacifier, but more importantly, Josh absolutely depends on it. We introduced it around one week old, and thankfully, it caused no issues with his nursing. In fact, it’s become his go-to for comfort and soothing. I’m not exaggerating when I say we have about 20 of these scattered everywhere – throughout the house, in the car, tucked into his car seat, and always in my diaper bag. He looks utterly adorable sucking on it, and when you peek into his mouth, he has the cutest “little fishy” look. I did try offering him the Philips Avent pacifier as an alternative, but he decisively rejected it. Soothie it is, and we couldn’t be happier with its calming power.
- Boon Grass Drying Rack and Twig Drying Tree – Initially, I was on the fence about whether a dedicated drying rack for baby items was truly necessary, considering our small space. However, I am incredibly grateful that my sister surprised me with this set, because I use it every single day without fail. It provides such an easy, organized, and hygienic way to air dry bottles, pacifiers, and all the various parts from my breast pump. Its compact and playful design fits perfectly on our countertop and keeps everything neatly contained, preventing clutter and making cleanup a breeze. It’s definitely one of those items I didn’t realize I needed until I had it, and now I can’t imagine our kitchen without it.
- Graco SnugRide Click Connect Car Seat, the Elite Stroller, and Car Base – Deciding on a car seat and stroller system felt like one of the most daunting tasks, given the sheer number of options and their often exorbitant prices. After extensive research and trying out various models in person, we opted for simplicity and safety with the Graco Click Connect 35 infant car seat, and we absolutely love it. It’s reasonably priced, boasts excellent safety ratings, and Josh appears incredibly comfortable in it. I’m particularly glad we chose an infant car seat over a convertible model. Infant car seats, designed specifically for newborns, offer superior safety and a snug fit, in my opinion. The accompanying car base makes transfers incredibly quick and safe – literally a second to click him in or out, far superior to repeatedly buckling him in with a seatbelt, as our parents had to do! The Elite Stroller is equally fantastic. Josh often falls asleep in his car seat during drives, and the ability to simply click the car seat directly into the stroller without disturbing him is invaluable. While we don’t use the stroller daily – primarily for doctor’s appointments or joint grocery runs, preferring to babywear otherwise – I anticipate more frequent use as he grows. Its affordability compared to other high-end models ensures we didn’t overspend on something we’d use intermittently in the early months.
- Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddle Blankets – These swaddle blankets are truly lovely. In keeping with my preference for simplicity, I chose the plain white ones, though they come in a delightful array of colors. They are incredibly soft, generously sized, and initially made swaddling Josh quite easy for me, much more so than the “cheater” swaddle wraps. However, Josh quickly revealed that he absolutely detests being swaddled! He needs his arms free and elevated. Swaddling him actually woke him up because he’d become so annoyed with his arms pinned down. I gave up trying to swaddle him for sleep around four weeks. While his startle reflex did wake him often initially, within a couple of weeks, he adapted, and it bothered him less. Despite not using them for swaddling for long, these blankets remain invaluable. They are perfect for cuddling, ideal as a soft play mat for tummy time on the floor, or as a lightweight cover in his car seat to keep him warm during naps. I initially bought 12, which was far more than necessary; three to six would have been perfectly sufficient.
- HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper – Our original plan was for Shawn to build a custom, tiny crib for Josh to reside in our bedroom. However, Josh made his grand entrance much sooner than anticipated, leaving us no time for construction. While on bedrest in the hospital, I made an impulsive decision to buy this bassinet, and I’m incredibly glad I did. It’s the perfect size for our small bedroom. I particularly love its adjustable height feature, which allowed me to raise it high enough to easily see Josh while I was lying in bed. The side effortlessly collapses with a gentle push, making it incredibly easy on my arms to retrieve or return the baby during nighttime feedings. This feature was a game-changer for exhausted, post-partum arms. The mesh side also meant I could constantly keep an eye on Josh, often just staring at his sweet sleeping face. Around six weeks, Josh gradually transitioned to sleeping in our bed about 80% of the time, sleeping longer stretches and allowing us even closer cuddles. While I wouldn’t recommend co-sleeping with a brand-new newborn, especially one as tiny as Josh was, the Bassinest provided the perfect safe, close sleeping arrangement for those initial critical weeks. Now, Shawn has completed an amazing trundle crib that connects directly to our bed, where Josh sleeps soundly.
- Solly Baby Wrap – I am a huge proponent of babywearing, and this wrap has made it not just possible but enjoyable. It’s often the only way I can manage to cook dinner most nights, keeping Josh close and content while I get things done. It’s also incredibly convenient for solo grocery shopping trips, freeing up my hands and avoiding the bulk of a stroller. We take a walk every day, and I much prefer wearing him, feeling his warmth and closeness, rather than pushing a stroller. When we visit friends or family for dinner, wearing him allows me to eat comfortably and easily. This wrap is truly fantastic! I use it multiple times a day. I started using it when he was a tiny 5-pound newborn, and I’m still comfortably using it now that he’s nearly 13 pounds. I chose the neutral gray color so it would complement any outfit, making it a stylish and practical choice. I absolutely love it!
- CoveredGoods Multi Use Nursing Cover – While designed primarily as a nursing cover, I’ve actually used it for that purpose fewer than five times. I truly dislike nursing in public and simply can’t get the hang of it, opting instead to bring a pumped bottle. However, this cover excels as a car seat cover, which is how I use it constantly. I love covering the car seat when we’re out in public and Josh is sleeping; it creates a cozy, dark environment for him. It also seems to keep him warmer, blocking out cold air and wind, which was essential during a chilly December and January. For doctor’s appointments, I always keep him covered to minimize his exposure to germs. As he gets older, it will transition beautifully into a grocery cart cover. And yes, it can even double as a stylish scarf! I once had an embarrassing moment where my breasts unexpectedly leaked, leaving noticeable wet marks on my shirt. Thankfully, I had this cover in my diaper bag, and wearing it as a scarf instantly hid the stains. It folds up incredibly tiny, fitting perfectly into my diaper bag. I adore the neutral gray and white stripe pattern I chose. It’s a truly versatile and indispensable item!
- Skip Hop Diaper Bag – The market for diaper bags is saturated, but my Skip Hop bag stands out as a clear favorite. It’s not overly large, striking the perfect balance for carrying everything I need without becoming cumbersome. It features just the right number of well-placed pockets to keep essentials organized and easily accessible. Being waterproof and washable is a huge bonus, making cleanup of inevitable spills simple. It also came with a small, portable changing pad, which I use every time we’re out. The convenient clips allow it to attach easily to our stroller, adding to its practicality. I especially love the stylish white and gray chevron design I picked out – perhaps you’re noticing a pattern in my color preferences? Ha! It’s truly a functional and aesthetically pleasing choice for minimalist parents.
- Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Bubble Bath – Initially, I was using Johnson & Johnson Baby Wash, but growing concerns about certain ingredients prompted me to seek out safer alternatives. A trip to Target, where I meticulously smelled every baby product, led me to Burt’s Bees. Its gentle, natural fragrance was my favorite. I simply squirt a small amount into Josh’s bath, letting him enjoy the soft, soapy water. I typically adopt a minimalist approach to personal care products for myself, and I find myself applying the same philosophy to Josh. While I have their lotion, I rarely use it; his skin is already wonderfully soft on its own. This bubble bath provides a gentle, reassuringly natural option for bath time.
- Gerbers and Carter’s Long Sleeve Onsies – I’m genuinely surprised by how little clothing Josh actually needs. My own wardrobe consists of basic jeans and tops, and Shawn’s daily uniform is Levi’s and Hanes white t-shirts – a look I actually love. We embrace simplicity when it comes to clothes, and I’ve found the same principle applies perfectly to Josh. During the winter months, he primarily lives in long-sleeve onesies paired with baby leg warmers. I have eight plain white Gerbers onesies and two of Carter’s four-packs (boys’ colors), totaling 16 onesies. Ha! The Gerbers onesies are stretchier and offer a slightly snugger fit, which I prefer, but they only come in white. For colored options, Carter’s is my go-to, though they seem cut for chubbier babies, they still work just fine for my leaner little one. All his everyday clothes fit neatly into a single small basket on his changing table. Of course, he has a few adorable outfits for special occasions like Christmas, but for daily wear, onesies are our practical and comfortable staple.
- juDanzy Baby Leg Warmers – I am utterly obsessed with baby leg warmers! First and foremost, they are incredibly cute – Josh looks absolutely adorable in them. Secondly, they make diaper changes incredibly easy; there are no pants to pull down or unbutton, just a simple unbuttoning of his onesie. Thirdly, I much prefer the way he looks in them. When Josh wears onesies with full pants or sweats, I sometimes feel he resembles a chubby potato. But with a onesie and leg warmers, you can actually see his little shape, which I find much cuter. I honestly have about 12 pairs, allowing me to mix and match with different colored onesies. They all fit neatly into another small basket on his changing table, keeping his minimalist wardrobe organized and stylish.
- VTech Baby Monitor – Initially, I didn’t think a baby monitor was necessary given our tiny house; I assumed I’d always be able to hear Josh. However, around two months, when he finally started napping independently in his bed, I realized the value of this audio monitor. It allows me to hear his very first stirrings, giving me time to discreetly enter the room, reinsert his pacifier before he fully wakes, and often prolong his nap. It’s also invaluable for those brief moments when I need to step outside to take out the trash or retrieve the mail, providing peace of mind. I specifically chose an audio-only model and still don’t feel the need for a video feature; simply hearing him is perfectly sufficient for our needs.
- Electric Heating Pad – This is a brilliant baby hack my mom shared with me, especially useful during cold weather. When I feed Josh during the night, I place this small heating pad in his bed to warm it up while he’s eating. Then, when he drifts off to sleep in my arms, I can gently lay him down without the jarring sensation of a cold mattress waking him. Before this trick, the sudden temperature change would often jolt him awake. Now, he barely feels the difference, allowing for smoother transitions back into his bed. It’s been incredibly helpful during these chilly winter months, ensuring more peaceful nights for everyone.
- GroVia Cloth Wipes – While we use cloth diapers, and I’m considering a dedicated post on our newborn cloth diapering experience (let me know if you’re interested!), I chose not to include those specific items here, as cloth diapering isn’t for everyone. However, these cloth wipes are a constant in our home, even beyond diaper changes! They’re not just for making homemade wipes; I use them continually as little rags to wipe up spit-up, drool, and to tuck into Josh’s shirt during feedings to catch any milk drips, keeping his clothes clean. They are incredibly soft and super absorbent, far superior to stiff, scratchy paper towels. I have approximately 60 of them, and we go through them all within about three days. I keep small stacks readily available in the living room and on our headboard, making them accessible wherever we are.
- Boppy Nursing Pillow – This pillow was instrumental in making the initial stages of breastfeeding comfortable and easy as we both got the hang of it. I especially appreciated it during nighttime feedings, as Josh could comfortably lounge and even doze off while nursing. To protect it from inevitable spills, I invested in a water-resistant cover first, then topped it with the elephant gray cover. I specifically chose the gray, as many other covers were too colorful and busy for my minimalist taste. This layered approach truly safeguards the pillow from spit-up and leaking milk, keeping it fresh and clean. It offered invaluable support and comfort during those intensive early weeks of nursing.
- The Windi Gas Relief – This one might seem a bit unconventional, but it has been a major lifesaver for us. The Windi is a small, disposable gas catheter designed to be gently inserted into a baby’s rectum. It works by naturally relaxing the anal sphincter muscles, creating an opening large enough to allow trapped gas to escape. And it truly works wonders! There have been numerous occasions when Josh was fussy and inconsolable, only for us to discover it was due to gas pain. After using The Windi, a significant amount of air (along with, occasionally, a bit of poop, so always have a diaper underneath!) is released, and he is instantly relieved and transformed back into a happy baby. It feels like magic – I am incredibly grateful for this marvelous invention that provides such quick and effective comfort.
- NoseFrida Snotsucker – This device is, hands down, the easiest and most effective way to clear a baby’s congested nose. Josh recently had his first cold, and the NoseFrida was put to extensive use. It might seem a little unconventional to suck snot yourself, but the hygienic filters ensure no transfer, and the relief it provides to a stuffy baby is instant and priceless. Traditional bulb syringes often felt ineffective or intrusive, but the NoseFrida allows for consistent, controlled suction that genuinely clears airways, helping Josh breathe and sleep better. It’s a simple tool, but an essential one for any parent dealing with a congested little one.
Here are some items I acquired that ultimately proved unnecessary or unsuitable for our family and that I wouldn’t repurchase:
- **Swaddle Sleep Sacks**: Despite trying various popular brands, all swaddle sleep sacks unfortunately failed for us. Josh is among that narrow percentage of babies who absolutely despise being swaddled. I tried the Halo Sleepsack, the innovative Woombie, the adjustable SwaddleMe, and even the “arms up” design of the Swaddle Up. None worked. Not a single one! His deep aversion to having his arms pinned down meant they actively woke him rather than soothing him. While they didn’t work for Josh, I’ve stored them away, just in case a future baby might appreciate them. Of all the options, I personally preferred the Woombie and Swaddle Up due to their zipper closures, which were much quieter and less prone to snagging on laundry or other items compared to the loud, clingy velcro of other brands.
- **Baby Bather**: I registered for this baby bather, and while I used it for the first few weeks until Josh’s belly button healed, it quickly became obsolete. I found it far simpler and more enjoyable to just hold Josh directly while giving him sink baths. He loves to squirm and kick his legs freely, which the bather restricted. Furthermore, eliminating the bather meant one less item to store in our small house and one less thing to dry after bath time. I’m glad I chose an affordable option rather than an expensive one, given its very brief period of utility for us.
- **Fisher-Price Snugabunny Swing**: I initially registered for this Fisher Price Snugabunny Swing after hearing rave reviews. However, upon arrival, its sheer size was immediately apparent – it’s absolutely gigantic! Far too large for our modest home. While Josh did enjoy it for the short time we had it, its overwhelming footprint made it impractical. I also found its aesthetic, with lace and bunny rabbits, a bit too “girly” for my son. We ultimately decided to keep only the MamaRoo, which offers a more compact and modern solution for soothing and entertaining him in our small space.
- **Zoli Buzz Nail Trimmer**: I used the Zoli Buzz Nail Trimmer perhaps three times before realizing it was far too time-consuming. Filing down all of Josh’s tiny nails with this device was taking nearly 30 minutes per session. Now, I simply use regular, small baby nail clippers. I wait until Josh is fast asleep, then I can trim all his nails in less than five minutes, followed by a quick, gentle file to smooth any edges. It’s a much more efficient and practical method for keeping his nails short and safe.
